The tight end is a big deal in the NFL. He is a matchup nightmare. He is a touchdown machine, particularly in the red zone, as I constantly remind my twitter followers. The tight end is, for some teams, the cornerstone of the passing game.

Unfortunately, not so this year with the Miami Dolphins and their tight end Charles Clay.
Clay has 14 catches for 111 yards (a modest 7.9 yards per catch average) without a touchdown. It has been quite a disappointment so far, following last year's breakout season in which Clay caught 69 passes for 759, averaging 11.0 yards per catch, and scoring six touchdowns.
“It hasn’t gone as I planned," Clay said this week. "Obviously, I set very high standards for myself. Like I said, the bye week kind of gave us a chance to look back at those things, kind of look back and figure out how I could correct them. It’s just a matter of doing it now. I’m ready to go."

I still think he's a good player. Never thought he was elite. I just want him to start producing. He's a critical piece. Hopefully he's all healed up!

This is going to be a tough one for the contract extension. The Clay of last year warranted the extension but is this like Reshad Jones situation or will Clay be more consistent? There is a good portion left in the season to try and still figure that out at least.

Neither Clay nor Hartline is getting targeted as much this year. Lazor seems to want Tanny to get the ball to Wallace. Hard to produce when the passes aren't coming your way.

I was thinking more along the lines of....

Unfortunately Travis Kelce doesn't meet your requirements. He's only 6'5".

And contrary to Johngarry not every other NFL team has one. Most do, but a lot of the 6'6" TEs in the league are guys you've never heard of. Who would you rather have 6'3" Dwayne Allen or 6'6" Coby Fleener? Allen's the better player on the same team. Would you rather have 6'3" Vernon Davis or 6'7" Mason Brodine (from the Rams for those that don't know)?

Clay has some intangibles you can't measure. He runs like one tough SOB. Bowling over the Charger last year (or was it year prior), shaking two tacklers for the TD in Pitt even though his momentum was going away from the goal line, getting that impossible-looking FD on the game winning drive against NE last year. You don't part w guys like this. He's hurt and we installed a new offense. Let him heal and let the coaches figure out how to get the ball to him more. I just don't want to see the goal line fade to him anymore - that's a dumb play and should be reserved for those 6'6" TEs you guys mention.

I'm gonna file this under the "Reshad Jones" category, won't live up to the contract.

This year, Clay has caught 14 of 21 throws for 111 yards, 1 drop, and 53 of those yards came after contact with causing 4 missed tackles. He caught 5 of 5 for 9 yards behind the line, where last year he caught a total of 7 for the year. He is 6 of 10 0-9 yards for 46 yards, and 3 of 6 10-19 yards for 56 yards.

From what I have seen, the injury has hurt him, and so has the way the team has used him. IF the knee is fine, he will be as well for the next 12 games.
