Rams | Reportedly denied permission to speak with Baggett
Fri, 20 Jan 2006 17:56:17 -0800

Jim Thomas, of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, reports the St. Louis Rams were reportedly denied permission by the Miami Dolphins to speak with Dolphins assistant head coach-wide receivers coach Charlie Baggett. As a result, Henry Ellard could be retained as wide receivers coach.

Nice, thats what im talking about

the one question is, did Baggett want to go....would we want to keep a guy that doesnt want to be here?

Maybe we can get some compensation for him in the form of draft picks and trade him to the Rams?

Well, in my opinion, he wasnt going there to be WR coach- Linehan wanted him as OC because he knows the system, and Scott will be calling the plays anyway. So obviously this increased role and salary would have been nice. However, like it has been said, he has deeper ties with Saban then Linehan (from his Michigan State days) and is probably very comfortable here on this up and coming team. Its not a matter of "not wanting to be here" like Heimerdinger in NY.

I don't think you can get compensation for a non Head Coach.

so now he stays s there a posibility he gets the OC job?

Could be that he now will be two things...one is a backup to become OC if Saban doesn't find a better candidate and two, a go-between to help keep the offense as close as possible the same even with the new coordinator....

On the other hand, if option #1 is the reason, he could be released after someone else is selected...

IMO, he is an insurance policy in case Mularkey doesn't pan out. Regarding, Baggett - I wonder if he can leave the Dolphins if he is offered a job promotion by the Rams (i.e., Assistant Head Coach). The Dolphins and other teams have used that title to avoid the obstacles surrounding "lateral" hires.

I hope it ends up that we hire Mike Mularkey as offensive coordinator and keep Charlie Baggett as Assistant Head coach/Offense/Wide Receivers.

Just let Mularkey step in where Linehan was and everything else stays the same.

Baggett is OUR assistant head coach.. Thats how we got him away from the Vikings in the first place.

Have you heard anything else about this rumor of Mularkey being named the OC? I know that one dude said that Chris Mortonson reported that he was gonna be.

I really like that Baggett is staying with us. Having him or Mularkey running the offense would be fine with me. It would be kind of interesting to see of Baggett will run his own offense or run the same style that Leinhan ran.

I seriously doubt that. Why would the rule be limited to only head coaches? I think if the Rams and Linehan wanted him that badly they would possibly give us a 4th-5th round pick in trade for him.

Baggett already has the assistant head coach title with us, so save becoming a HC, there is no promotion type move he can make.

I'm also pretty sure that the rules were changed again, so that the only move you can't block is assistant to head coach. In addition, only head coaches moving to other teams can get draft compensation (as posted earlier in this thread).

Killer Dolphins reported that he heard Mort say that on 790. I trust him. There's no reason he would make that up.

I haven't heard anything, but that's because Mort said that after press time today. Wait till midnight ET tonight, and I bet there's a blurb somewhere that will say that Saban talked with Mularkey and he's probably the leading candidate.
