Chester to miss Training camp?

I don't think we can depend on either Chester or Bowens for anything significant, they should both probably retire.

Training camp generally starts the last week of July.

This has me concerned. If they're already talking about him missing TC, that could easily mean it will extend longer. Ugh. We might want to sign Traylor AND one of the inevitable post-June 1 cuts for DT help.

As long as Chester is conditioned and has his stamina up to par, I really don't think he needs a TC.

  • All players need to be in camp for obvious reasons, new scheme, coaches and players.
  • Saban wants to be able to evaluate players and positions not only for this season but the long term.
  • If the scheme employed is close to what is being reported guys like Chester will need to know different assignments, calls and techniques ie. over, under, zero. Even seasoned pro's like ZT say they learn something every day.
  • No more free passes, IMO the Saban camp will be all about... can you play, what kind of production can we expect from the player/position and how does this player fit in our long term goals.
  • Chester needs to prove he can play... period.

If he is physically fit, he will be fine. I'm not worried about Chester picking up on the technical aspects of the DT position, he's a seasoned vet and I'm sure he knows how to stunt.

  • Well if he is asked to move over the center that may be an issue seasoned vet or not.
  • Saban and staff need to evaluate players, that includes Chester.
  • Can you play, can you produce, can the team depend on you, these are all decided in camp on the field... not from a golf cart.
I hope Chester and Timbo come back strong as ever, if they do we are a bettter team. But to say he doesn't need to be in camp, just in shape is not going to cut this year.

I agree. I have some confidence that he will be ready to go before the season starts, and if that's the case I think he will be and we will be in pretty good shape.

With the lack of depth we currently have at the DT position along with the lack of available DT's in FA gives Chester that free pass for this year. He will be evaluated for 2006 during the 2005 regular season. He has already proven his dependability throughout his career - last year was the only year throughout his career where he missed signifigant playing time. I stand by my thought that he does not need to be in pads for training camp to learn Saban's nuances (if any) of the DT position. If he has to play over center(contigent on a probable Traylor signing), again I don't think his learning curve will be that big because his main job will be to physically dominate.

  • Agree he would be an asset if proven he can be healthy and productive.
  • Chester has missed games in all 7 seasons as a pro except for 2 with last year being his worst year.
  • His productivity has been in decline over the past 3 years.
  • You can physically dominate in college, in the pro's you need technique.
I hope he returns healthy and proves to be productive, he needs to be in camp to be evaluated on the field. I hope he can be.

I guess will have to agree to disagree that 7-year veteren starter Larry Chester doesn't have the technique to perform in the pros under Saban. I think he does. He will be evaluated in games played during the regular season if he can't dress for TC.

  • Sapp struggled last year in Oakland moving to a different technique.
  • Never said he "didn't have the technique to perform in the pro's under Saban" those are your words not mine....
  • I said he needed to be in camp to be evaluated and learn (or improve) the techniques of the new position/system.
  • If ZT can say he is learning new technique then I think the same could be said for Chester.
To be clear, I hope he comes back strong, camp is a good place to start.

Like I said.. We will have to agree to disageee.

His technique will be fine and if healthy will play to expectations without dressing for training camp. :)

And even with that, our DT's usually don't need much time to prepare anyway. It's a long season, I would prefer to see both Chester and Bowens sit out for the majority of preseason.
