Love John as a HC, but he has never been a GM, nor does he probably want to be. DeCosta who was Newsome Assistant GM took Newsome (who hired John) as GM in 19. Now if John was available and we didn't have a GM in place, I could see Ross going after him first (almost any GM would want him as HC) and letting John have some input on GM. This is what happened when the Chargers hired Jim.
