Chris Grier, Brian Flores Happy With Foundation Laid

Except i never said you build the team through free agency. I said it's the free agency era.

We lack a foundation because the people that have been drafting since Jimmy Johnson left have left a lot to be desired, this includes our current GM who for some reason Stephen Ross surmises will finally get it.

I'm sure Grier would agree with you that it's unrealistic to expect playoffs this upcoming season, it's another year he can collect a check with no real accountability.

The web of BS we're actually in is continuing to think it takes this exorbitant amount of time to build a competitive team. It doesn't.

Just disagree with your premise.

This team is basically a bare bones team. A lot of whom I imagine will not be on the roster in 2020. And if Fitzpatrick is the starter again next year, he will eventually come back down to earth. My views on Rosen are well known.

So I just don't see how you can hold such expectations, with a team seriously devoid of high end talent. Howard is probably the highest graded and valuable asset on the team currently. And I dont see him winning games.

The current reset has nothing to do with anyone else. This is 2020. They tore it down and started from scratch. The owner gave the HC a 5 year deal. Most in the fanbase and media understand those expectations are best reserved for year 3 or 4.

But keep hope alive I guess.

This draft is very important. We cant have a draft like last year's and expect to be much better,.. marginally better yeah but not much. We need to hit on at least 1 superstar player with this much ammo and a bunch of other goods players. We need to find a good offensive lineman. Short of Laremy Tunsil who fell in our lap, Grier has not shown me he can pick a good offensive lineman in the draft.

There's no reason this team shouldn't be a wildcard team next season.
Looking at the schedule and figuring Fitzpatrick will probably be the QB next year, I think another 5 win season is the best the Dolphins will do next year. This is at least a three year rebuilding job and they have far too many holes to fill to expect them to be a playoff team next year. The Patriots, Bills, and even the Jets will be better than the Dolphins next year in the AFC East,

By the time this team eventually returns to the playoffs, I think they will have a new HC and GM even though I thought Flores did a good job last season. Yet I also thought Gase and Sparano did good jobs in their first year as HC of the Dolphins and we all know how things ended for both of those coaches..

A team that went 4-12 last year is currently in the Super Bowl. With a big pile of money we can improve the overall talent level of the team rather than focusing on 2-3 high priced vets. Find a couple of stars in the draft and all of the sudden we're cooking.

I don't think we'll be competing next year but I don't think a wild card spot is completely unrealistic. The year after that when Tua is fully healthy is when things will start to get real.

Why wouldnt we be better than this year's record? We will improve in both the draft and free agency. They wont be wasting money on 2 FAs but probably spreading it around to help fill those holes. Will we be a SB contender? Unlikely, but to say we wont get 6-10 wins and improve is selling them a little short.

I don’t think Tua is going to be the Dolphins QB but if he is completely healthy in 2021, he will certainly help whichever team drafts him become a better team. I just don’t see him having a long career in the NFL because I think his body will not hold up in the NFL. I think the Dolphins will draft Herbert if they draft at QB at 5 or they will wait until 2021 to draft their QB if they decide to pass on a QB in the first round this year.

The schedule is much more difficult next year. The Jets will be better next year and Buffalo and the Patriots are better than the Dolphins, even if the Dolphins did beat the Patriots. I hope they win more than 5 games but I expect Fitzpatrick to be the starter and history clearly shows he just isn’t that good. He is basically a backup who can come in and play well for a short period of time as a starter and then he reverts to the mistake prone QB he has been throughout his career.

I would rather them go with Rosen or the QB they draft, if they draft a QB early but Gaily likes to go with veteran QB’s. So I expect Fitzpatrick to be the starter and lead the Dolphins to another 5-11 record and another top 5 pick in the 2021 draft.

As far as having all their draft picks and money to spend in free agency is concerned. As long as it is Grier making those draft picks and signing free agents, I just don’t see this team improving. I have zero confidence his his ability as a talent evaluator and I really don’t see the Dolphins being any better than mediocre at best until they have a better GM making draft decisions.

We traded 4-5 starting players. We cut or chose not to re-sign 4 other starters. We lost 20 players to IR that included the opening day starters (or high snap count players) at both CB spots, the return specialist, strong safety, ILB, WR, RB & DE.

We still won 5 games (with 2 other games lost by 1 point) with a journeyman QB, UDFA RB and a secondary filled with practice squad players.

I don't think improving by 4 games is that out of the realm of possibility considering we have 14 draft picks and 100 mil in cap space to replenish the roster.

Yes, Grier and co. will have to be better in the draft but with that amount of picks, they could go status quo and still improve the team drastically. They typically do well in the first round and we will have 3 picks.

I also don't put much importance on strength of schedule other than having west coast trips. Teams rarely turn out the way you thing they will at the start of the year and we beat good teams last year.

There are many teams with superior talent who also have plenty of cap space to sign the better free agents on the market. Players looking to go to a pl

The other teams in the division and in the rest of the league are planning to improve their rosters also. While I take nothing away from how well the players were able to play last season, I just think it is going to take more than one offseason to upgrade this team to the level it takes to make the playoffs. I have learned over the past two decades to not get my expectations too high when it comes to the Dolphins. While I expect a 5 win season next year, I always hope for the Dolphins to make the playoffs.

As I stated earlier I don’t have much confidence in Grier as a talent evaluator. Hopefully the staff he has hired to help him in talent evaluation will be able to provide the input to improve the talent selected during the draft and in free agency.

Without a true #1 QB and with so many holes to fill on the roster and what appears to be a much tougher schedule next year, I will stick with my 5-11 prediction for the 2020 season and hope that they prove me wrong.

I hear ya. I have the same reservations but you would have to be REALLY bad to screw this up. LOL. I'm hoping another year with Reggie and Allen will help the scouting department.

But you're right, it's going to take more than one year to get some stability on this team.

Seems 1/2 the foundation has been removed

We deconstructed an annual 6 to 7 win team to build it back up to be a 6-7 win team? I can't imagine 5 or less wins are acceptable next season or 6/7 for that matter.

We will just have to disagree, in the free agency era there's no reason this team shouldn't be significantly improved next year and be in the playoffs. That should at least be their expectation, i'd be kind of concerned if it's not.
I'm with you. I get in arguments all the time with people that think that we will be a 5-11 team next year. I don't understand how we're getting ready to use 14 draft picks and have $100+mm to spend in FA (though of course we won't spend it all to prevent a cap hell scenario) and somehow it turns into NO improvement. I don't get it. We lost two games by one point, we lost one game by a TD and one by 10 points. With 9 new starters (I'm assuming 7 from draft and two from FA), we don't win those games with the starters from this year now in those positions becoming quality backups? I get that this time of year it's all speculation but I don't get how so many can be pessimistic. I am fully expecting a 10 win year next year. Sure, call me delusional because I'm not going full Eeyore on it like so many I don't care.

It's not out of the realm of possibility that we could make the playoffs, but we surely won't be making any deep runs.

I believe we are at least another year, if things go our way, before we are playoff competitive.
