Everyone has witnessed all of the coverage on Chris Long the past month, but I've noticed a parallel between C Long and Matt Roth at this time three years ago, but without the HOF pedigree and national coverage.

Similar size, 'high motor guy', good technique, went against top LT's in practice daily (R Gallery vs D Furgeson), blah, blah, blah.

I had high expectations for Roth. I guess maybe I was hoping for a young Trace Armstrong. Now that Chris Long is a distinct possibility at #1, I don't want to go through the same let down.

If he is as good as everyone makes him out to be, great, line him up opposite JT and let the carnage begin. Otherwise take the other Long.

The differences between Long and Roth are myriad, and if you can't see 'em, I apologize. From athleticism to ethic to ability, they are worlds apart.

That may be true, but my point is that at this very same time frame in 2005 many of the same adjectives were being used to describe Roth. I know it's the nature of the draft, but I'm always skeptical.

BTW, I'm not totally disappointed in Roth. I just thought he would have had more of an impact by now.

Two different people coming from two different places. Howie will have a very significant affect on Chris, as he already has. They may have the same 'labels' but I am sure Chris performs those labels better.

Totally untrue. Long performed much better than expected at the combine and was more of an impact player in college. He's a much better athlete/football player than Roth plus all the same adjectives.
Who cares if their ht and wt are similar or if they are both white guys.
Is every 6'4" inch white QB as good as Marino was coming out of college?

Chris longs only claim to fame is he is Howie Longs son. He is no better then Matt Roth. I dont think we need another Matt Roth on the team.

Following my post. IF we drafted Chris Long and Jason Taylor left the Dolphins and Chris took his place and he became as good as Taylor. How is that going to help us win a Superbowl? Taylor was here 10 years and we never once sniffed the AFC Championship Game. Chris Long would be a great second rounder not a top pick.

Wow.

This sucks. We have drafted every position, some more than once, since 1973 and won no superbowls. Looks like Miami should start drafting jockies, tennis players, and chess grandmasters. Maybe if we draft a 4' 10' 90 pound woman, we can win a Superbowl. Thanks for your quality input. I would not have made the connection with out your help.

Flash news:

THIS IS A TEAM SPORT

Don’t listen to him Slippery, he’s just jealous. You figured out the system!

I figured it out before him - I've been claiming that drafting anyone at any position in any round is bad news for years!

Why are these posts made with the assumption that nothing else on the team will improve beyond the draft pick? Yes, subtracting JT from the defense would probably be a blow, but before you make that assumption too, did you watch all the games last year? JT didn't play that well. I honestly don't know how he made the Pro Bowl. Most of his sacks came off of coverage sacks or when someone else forced the QB toward his side. My point is that you can't look at one move a team makes and believe that to be the one move that puts them over the top. What would have happened last year of New England added Moss, Welker, and Stallworth, but Brady went down in Week 1 with an injury? Would the Patriots D have been able to step up? Would their offensive system been able to pickup Matt Cassel as the starter?

Are you actually going to type out this lame brain argument again after an entire thread full of reply's pummeled this "insightful" view into rubble?

I could list a number of All Pro players representing every single position on a football field which played on teams that didn't win a Super Bowl.

I guess we should never draft a top prospect at any position because they just won't help us win a Super Bowl.

How exactly do you win one of those then there sparky if All Pro players are actually a negative factor to teams?

Should we trade out of all our picks and drop into the 7th round for all of them?

Chris Long does not have the short arms that hinder Matt Roth. I also believe Chris Long is supposed to be stronger than Roth.

I also don't think Roth is a bad player. Just that his weakneses are over-exposed as an every down starter. Roth is a good 3rd defensive end whose high-motor, all-out effort on every play would work well as an occasional sub. He was much more productive in that roll the year before when Kevin Carter was the starter
