Chris Long looks like a good prospect, but so did Matt Roth. Would we take him 1st this year?

If Umenyiora, Strahan and Tuck hadn't been such a huge factor in the playoffs, I can't imagine we'd even be considering this.

Matt Roth - 6'4 / 275
Sr. Year - 51 Tackles / 12 Sacks
4.77 40

Chris Long - 6'4 / 284
Sr. Year - 79 Tackles / 14 Sacks
4.77 40

I don't know who to take, but I don't think Long should go #1.

Compare with:

Mario Williams - 6'7 / 291
Sr. Year - 62 Tackles / 14.5 Sacks
4.66 40

Seems like a crap shoot to me.

Courtney Brown - 6'4 / 275
Sr. Year - 55 Tackles / 13.5 Sacks
4.53 40

Chris Long has the clear advantage in tackles, but I just think this would be such a risky pick in light of the above comparisons.

Good Post. Something I always wonder is how the current stock of players would match up against previously drafted players when they were at this stage. Like how Chris Long and Mario Williams match up at the combine and how they were viewed by the "experts".

If you are relying strictly on numbers to determine who is worth the #1 overall pick then you are missing the big picture. The first thing you would be missing is that Roth, Williams and Brown all played in 4-3 defenses in college and not the 3-4 like Long.

So I guess watching ACTUAL game film, looking at productivity have no bearing on whether a player will actually succeed in the NFL.
Measurables mean very little. Aubrey Beavers and Eddie Blake were "perfect" in terms of measurables, but neither could play a lick of football.
I get a kick listening to some of these posts every yr during the scouting combine.

White defensive ends = being the same. It really is amazing that people can compare the 2

Just as was the case with Matt Roth during the months leading to the draft, Chris Long's name can't be mentioned without his "non-stop motor" being mentioned.

There's the similarity.

Well, Matt Roth's non-stop motor hasn't adjusted to the NFL very well.

Dont quit your day job.

Thanks! Luckily I'm unemployed and in law school, so I can mess around with this board for another 2 and a half years.

If it doesn't work out for me, I'll probably just bite the bullet, take my J.D. and practice law.

But here's to hoping, though!!!

One notable difference between Long and Roth is reach. don't have the numbers...but Long's is pretty much ideal while Roth's was limited. Also, 40 yd dash is an indicator of speed, but not necessarily quickness. I wonder what each of their 10-yd splits were?

Hate to break it to you, but if you're at UM, you're going to have a damn hard time finding a decent job in 2.5 years. Unless you're at the very top of your class. Your poor logic skills in equating the two players because they share one (positive) trait, leads me to believe you won't be.

Well hopefully you'll learn to pay attention to the things that matter before making statements in your law career because you clearly haven't learned to do that before posting.
