hey fin fans. coahes are not that stupid. ok, so maybe dave is close, but he's not that stupid. is he?
it has been reported in several south florida media outlets and even nationally in both print and broadcast that dave and the offensive coaching staff are talking about how important it is to run the football, and that they're game planning to do just that against cinncy after their terrible performace against the jets in week 1. that's nice, isn't it? really, it is. but i don't buy it.
first of all, you never talk or even hint about what your game plan is going to be to the media. that is, unless you're trying to throw your opponent's preperation off. remember how it was reported from various "sources close to the dolphins" that feeley would get the start in week 1? well, obviously he didn't.
secondly, our offensive line IS NOT the jets offensive line. we do not knock people off the ball and cannot run on 8 and 9 man fronts. also, don't you think the bengals, knowing wannstedt's tendancies and that feeley will be making his first start, think we will try to run the ball, be conservative on offense, and win with field position created by good defense? cinncy has worked on run defense. all week. they are expecting us to "pound that thing up in there (wanny speak)" and they'll be much better prepared to atleast contain it.
the real issue being overlooked by many is the bad shape the bengal pass defense is in (that's understandable, though, because the dolphins haven't proven their ability to make teams pay for crowding the line and blitzing, and we all have jay to thank for that reputation). starting safeties kim herring and rogers beckett are out with injuries, and rookie cb madieu williams - who got burned by the jets #3 wr last week for a 46 yard td - is expected to start at safety. though cb deltha oneal will return after missing the final 3 preseaon games with a severe ankle sprain, he figures to be a bit rusty and less than 100%. you would have to be incoherent not to test oneal and the bengal 2nd string safeties right from the get-go. if you make just 1 big pass play it will force the bengals to back off and play more coverage. THEN you mix in the runs against lesser fronts and use playaction. the jets executed this game plan to perfection last week. the 46 yard td bomb came in the first quarter, forcing the bengals to respect the deep pass by backing the safeties off the ball and opening up the running game.
it seems like decent game plan to me. if you can't hit a big pass play against single coverage, then you don't deserve to win and you probably won't anyway. i'm afraid though, that even though wanny isn't that stupid, he might be that incoherent. perhaps there isn't even a difference. i guess we'll find out on sunday night.
