mods... I thumbed through some threads and missed it, otherwise it isn't there.

I was wondering why we didn't entertain trading thomas. I don't know if was a respect thing to outright release him so he could pick who he plays for or what.

Even if we get a 5th or 6th rounder for him, we would get something. That talent may or may not have panned out, but at least we would have tried. This way we get nothing, other than some cap room. Which obviously is nice as well.

There had to be a team out there would trade something to us for Zach.

Is there something I am missing here. It just doesn't make sense to me at this point, why we would just cut him without trying to get something for him.

thanks

It was a respect thing I believe. Let Zach pick were he wants to go.

I'm not a mod, but I (and I'm sure others will as well) can answer that question with a three part answer: 1) the market for a higher priced, mid 30 year old MLB who is coming off a serious concussion and I think a leg injury, is just not there. However, I'm sure there may have been a few teams that would have possibly entertained a late round pick for him. But that brings us to: 2) If we had waited to get something for him (likely a late round pick at best) it would have seriously limited his (Zach's) options for which teams he could go to. So they helped him by cutting him now and allowing him to go to who he wanted, not to whomever would trade for him (no choice). 3)Cutting him now also gives us savings on cap $$ now to use as we need for f/a's and/or to sign draft picks. The combo of these 3 together is the most likely reason as to why it was done now and not later in a trade deal. Remember, Zach thanked the current f/o by the way they handled this and I'm sure in their dicussions, all of these things were discussed and part of the decision process. I think doing what we did now, versus hanging on to him and forcing a trade to get a late pick (at best) but telling him where he had to go, was a much classier way of handling it.

I was thinking the exact same thing the other day. We owe it to Zach to let him choose what he wants to do. And a release gives him the best opportunity to pick whatever team he wants. It shows a lot of class by our front office to simply release someone who would definitly have value just so he can be happier as an end result.

Its called saving $$$$$ on a guy who had a serious concussion and letting him play for a winner to go out on a high note.

He was too old, he was slowing down, he doesn't fit the mold of what Parcells and Co. look for in a 3/4 ILB and he has a history of concussions and post concussion syndrome. He wasn't worth what he would have been making and I think he really needs to put the competitive part of his personality off to the side and think about his health. I don't want my last memory of Zach to be of him laying motionless on the ground and being carted off the field.

True, but did we even advertise a trade scenario. We could have picked up another late round pick. Zach was a mid round gem, we may have landed another... you never know.

I love zach, and I'm all about letting him have a voice. I honestly thought, that perhaps he agreed to be cut, to save the cap space, and would take on a coaching position. Than I read on here that he is looking at dallas and NO.

it is what it is though... thanks 54

I agree whole-heartedly... Leave the game while you still have your faculties about you, Zach...we love you as a player and upstanding citizen and for the heart and soul you played with while here...

Zach didn't have any trade value, teams would have just waited for us to release him.

I read Zach's comments, he said that Miami handled the situation in a very professional way and that he understood their reasoning.

Yup, with his all out style of play, he would more than likely suffer another head injury that could leave him in the same situation as that Pats LB that blames Belichick for forcing him to play/practice and now has long term effects.

works for me!

at least theres a mutual respect.

the dude gave us a lot to cheer about, it's gonna be rough seeing him in a different uni.

From the article

Did he seek a release, because the team was 1-15 last season?

"Never," he said. "Never. I would never do that to the organization that has been so good to me. If they feel that they don't need you anymore, then that's their decision."

He called that decision "understandable," citing his age, salary and concussion history. He said he met with new VP of football operations Bill Parcells, new GM Jeff Ireland and new coach Tony Sparano.

"They did it in a first-class manner," Thomas said. "They told me beforehand and explained everything."

cant trade someone with his contract.

also, there is still a chance he may retire. can't trade a player then have him retire.

some reasons we didn't try to trade him is... Parcells is trying to make massive room salary cap wise for free agency periods, the draft, and possible future trades... rebuilding. Thomas saves huge money with the release. if he tried to trade him, other teams would not like the money they'd have to pay that was on Thomas's contract for the questionmark he has playing wise due to age and injury coming in. It's a lot of cash to take with him. Also trading him would take a long time, and a lot of time isn't what Parcell has with free agency coming up, and wanting to rebuild right away.

Thomas was involved with discussions on this too... he wasn't left in the blue, ditched or anything. Parcells is a good man, and did this with respect, honor, and dignity. Hats off to Zach Thomas, i will miss him much!!! but this was something that yes, needed to be done.
