I was wondering what any of you thought of this guy. He seems like a great player that is very underrated due to Maualuga and Cushing dominating. He has great NFL bloodlines, his grandfather played for the 49ers in the 50's, his dad played for the Browns from 1978 to 1993 and the Falcons from 1994 to 1996, and his uncle Bruce went to 14 pro bowls an as OL for the Oilers/ Titans from 1983 to 2001. He would fit as an LB in a 4-3 or a 3-4 inside or outside. I think he could be a good steal in the second or third.

I have been thinking this for quite some time. In all of the USC games that I have watched (which I will admit are not many), he was the linebacker that stood out to me. He has pretty nice size and from what I saw could find his way to the ballcarrier.
 
Legacies always do well I don't know why. Maybe someday scientists will identify the gene that makes people NFL players and we will know why, but yes this guy would probably be a good steal for us.
 
I clearly recall his dad with the Browns and I always wished we had a good consistant LB corps like they did back then, and Matthews was a cornerstone.

I like Matthews, but he's not an elite player athletically unfortunately. The NFL has gotten bigger, stronger, quicker and faster. While he's an OLB, he'd be hard pressed to find a true position for our scheme in today's NFL. He's not quick enough or fast enough to play WOLB, he's not quite big enough to excel at SOLB, and he's not quite strong enough for ILB. Realistically, he could play all of those positions competently, but he simply wouldn't excel at them the way his dad did, so he would be more of a 3rd or 4th rounder for us. He's going to be picked in the 2nd round I'm fairly sure, most likely by a 43 team.

Mathews is HEAVILY shadowed because of Cushing, Mauluaga and Taylor Mays but Mathews was just as good as any of their LB's. If he is there in the 3rd or 4th round we have to take him. He is a great athlete with good build to him.
 
We went to the same high school. I like him on the 2nd day.
 
Being from So Cal...I got to see every game. Matthews played primarily as a defensive end this year because of the talent at linebacker. With Cushing and Maualuga manning two spots and Kaluka Maiava coming up strong, Carroll decided he HAD to have Matthews on the field somehow. So, he moved him to the defensive end spot...and Matthews delivered well. He is a very solid player that would play outside linebacker in the NFL. If we're still looking at OLB, and he's there in the 3rd or 4th round, I'd take him.
 
i think that he IS the most under rated player in this draft and could very well
end up being the best lb from this draft.

he was caught up in the tail wash of cushing an maulaga [understandably]
and folks didnt lock on to him like the others, but this guy is a REAL football
player and tough as nails.

i am hoping he is picked by us with our 3rd rounder. but, i am sure that after
the combine, he will not be a secret any longer and will probably be gone long
before our second rounders.

one of my top 5 players in this draft.
