CAN SOMEONE PLEASE EXPLAIN THE CLEO LEMON TRADE TO ME? THERE HAS BEEN NO MEDIA COVERAGE OR ANY EXPLANATION FOR THIS TRADE OTHER THAN "TO GET RID OF FEELY". FOR THE LIFE OF ME, HOW CAN WE GIVE UP A 6TH ROUND PICK FOR C.LEMON WHO'S BEEN AT BEST A CHARGER 3RD STRING BACK PROMOTED FROM THE DEVELOPMENTAL SQUAD?? FOR CRYING OUT LOUD, WE COULD HAVE HAD TIM RATTAY FOR A 7TH ROUNDER. CAN SOMEONE PROVIDE SOME INSIGHT ON THIS TRADE AND THIS LEMON KID OTHER THAN HE IS AN EMERGING STAR?:fire:

The general feeling was that we accomplished two, possibly three things with the Lemon trade...

1) We accelerated the cap hit we would have taken by cutting AJ after the season to the 2005 cap, thereby creating more available space under the cap this year (2006).
2) By trading AJ away, Saban avoided any potential "QB controversy" with Gus and AJ...there was going to be issues about starting AJ because of how poorly Gus was playing. It would/could have divided the team. With AJ gone, the only real option was Gus...Lemon was not around long enough to learn the system and Sage wasn't the answer either.
3) Lemon has some potential and may develop as a backup in the future, he offered more potential than what was seen in AJ. He may turn out to be our Sage Rosenfels when JH leaves the team in a couple of years...

Obviously, the biggest advantage was the cap hit avoidance by moving him out last year versus cutting him after the season...

The sixth round pick was pretty much just to pay the chargers for taking feeley's huge contract.

i agree. We gave them AJ, AND a 6th....and they gave us a Lemon. AJ Feeley, a guy who started for a year...plus a 6th, for a guy whos never started before in his life....makes no sense to me. We shoulda just gave them Feeley.

Chargers had Brees and Rivers.Lemon has some ability. He has a decent arm and good mobility. With good coaching he will turn into a SOLID #2 for years to come and maybe if given the chance a start in a few years.

We couldn't just give them Feeley because Feeley was overpaid. No one would have taken him without some compensation.

Larry did a nice job of succinctly explaining the details of the trade in post #3.

I suggest Mustangfinfan re-read post #3.

So if we ever find ourselves down by three touchdowns in the fourth quarter against the Bills, Saban will know who to call?

Ok...got me...but I just could never figure out why Sage couldn't beat out AJ or Ears in his time here, even tho he had some good moments when playing...

Nice first post. :welcome: :newbie:

Just be sure to hit that button to the left of the A, and below the tab and above the shift key next time.

Two reasons, my friend:

A). To get rid of A.J. Feeley. 'Nuff said.

B). Apparently, Cleo Lemon is supposed to be the future stellar back-up, something every team needs. Sage Rosenfels was, more or less, our stellar back-up. (May not of been a good starter, but when he just comes in during a game, there seems to be no ****ing stopping him, Bills be damned!).
