Time running out for Colts' quarterback, coach to reach Super Bowl
You’ve got to wonder about the Indianapolis Colts.
Can an all-pro kicker, Adam Vinatieri, replace an all-pro running back, Edgerrin James? Is Peyton Manning’s eighth season finally the charm? Does Marvin Harrison really turn 34 this month?
Is Tony Dungy replaying his Tampa Bay tenure, unable to get his team over the hump?
Are these Colts as good as they are ever going to get? Thursday night’s preview against St. Louis isn’t going to provide many immediate answers, but it’s the first look at a team that is trying to avoid another dose of frustration in what is becoming a predictable pattern.
Last season’s undefeated run and promising season, tragically interrupted by the death of Dungy’s son, ended in a resounding playoff loss to Pittsburgh.
The Colts took a physical beating, inside their home dome no less, confirming suspicions they are a finesse team more adept at winning style points than big games.
No doubt one of the league’s elite teams, they have been unable to break through for a Super Bowl appearance, falling short in each of Dungy’s four seasons. It’s hard to imagine them getting a clearer shot than last year, when they had home field advantage and a chance to play a Super Bowl indoors in Detroit. The regular-season record for Dungy in Indy now stands at 48-16; the playoff record 3-4.
