I am not mad at Saban. Wayne knows the situation better than anyone and he is pretty smart and he's not mad. I thought he was on the right track and hate to see him go, but:
  • he was not happy
  • the players don't buy into the rah rah speeches
  • the players don't want a guiding light father figure
  • his wife was nagging him to leave (if you're married you understand)
  • South Florida is good if you are single, but is far from family oriented (we loose free agents to Detroit for the same reason, DETROIT!)
  • he is now the highest paid coach in college football (that is a dream come true),
  • apparently many of those who worked for him didn't like him (at least that's what the media says now)
  • he should have been honest but he would have still been crucified (see Jim Mora, Jr., or distracting from the current season)
  • his new job better fits his skill sets (he can be a true dictator and loved for it)
  • contracts in the NFL are technicalities (if he had gone 0-32 and been fired, how many fans would have said wait a minute he's still got years left on his contract)
  • most of the post since he took the Alabama gig have talked about how horrible he was with personnel decisions anyway
I hope our new coach is:
  • offensive minded (obviously where we need help)
  • young (would die or retire before his plan is implemented, see Parcells, Gibbs)
  • cheap (Saints are doing ok, Gruden obviously not worth two 1sts, two 2nds, and $8 million and neither is any other coach)
  • not a big name (see inflated expectations for 2006)
  • relates well to players (no Coughlin)
  • relates well to coordinators (guilty by association see Mularkey)
  • relates well to the media (I want the inside scoop from reporters, not whining)
NFL coaches are overrated anyway. It is a crap shoot, every time. A lot of my reasons are listed above:
  • NFL players don't respond to speeches or guys who fill in for the fathers they never met (have you seen NFL locker room speeches on tv, awkward)
  • good coordinators go along way
  • they are definitely not worth picks or players
  • they can come from nowhere (2006 Saints, Jets, Mangini was like a 26 year-old ball boy, what a loser, now he is king of new york)
  • they can have bad track records (BB sucked in Cleveland)
  • they could have been great coordinators (Crenell sucks in Cleveland)
  • they can be the greatest of all time and then go 20 years without a Superbowl (The Don)
A crap shoot. It's just having the right guy, with the right characteristics, leading the right players, at the right time. That same guy could suck in any other scenario. Hopefully, Lady Luck will blow on the Fins dice this time around. Just my humble thoughts on the latest events. Feedback is welcome. Sorry, it was a little long winded.

I love the Fins.
