Usually one of the secrets to free agency is finding the connections on a current team's staff to free agent players who played for a position coach or coordinator or head coach somewhere else along the way.

For example: last year the Pittsburgh Steelers signed 3rd down back / return man Mewelde Moore. Of course, Moore had previously played for the Vikings. And the Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin had been in Minnesota as d-coordinator the year before and saw Moore up close and personal. So the signing of Moore made sense. Moore knew what he was getting into and Tomlin knew what he was getting in Moore.

As I look over our Dolphins staff, we do not have many connections with current free agents. Outside of the Cowboys players, there arent too many. This is due to the fact that many of our assistant coaches have spent their most recent years in college football, and some at smaller colleges.

So, as I was looking this over - much to my surprise and delight, I found that one of the connections we have is our defensive back coach Todd Bowles used to coach CB Leigh Bodden in Cleveland. I was thrilled with this, because I thought that Bodden would be a great addition at a position that we desperately need help. So, my question is...where are Todd Bowles recruiting skills?? How come he cant convince Bodden to take a serious look at us...and why hasnt he convinced the FO that Bodden would be a good signing??

But, before I get too disappointed...maybe its possible that Bowles knows Bodden, and therefore, if the FO chooses NOT to go after him - maybe they DO know what they are doing. Bowles should know Bodden as well as any FA corner available...so I have to believe that if they do not go after him, there is a reason...and its probably the right decision!

Just a thought!

If anyone knows of any other connections between our staff and available free agents (other than the obvious Cowboys players)...please post here. The only other one that I can think of is CB Shawn Springs in Washington was coached by our LB coach George Edwards - he was the d-coordinator in Washington for 2 years I believe.

I doubt there is a duo in the NFL more well connected than Bill Parcells & Jeff Ireland.

No matter what BP decides to do, there is not a single person on this board qualified to argue the move. Nobody here knows football better than any member of the trifecta and certainly not all three of them combined. If they don't want Bodden then he's just not worth it and they have a better plan for CB. Whether it be Jason Allen, the draft, or whatever. We just gotta have faith..

I dont know if the genius we all thought. We had a weak schedule last year. We have terrible CB and Bodden would be way better than what we have. No offense to you. I just question the moves we are not making. We cant fill every whole in the draft. Most players dont come in and contribute right away and BP knows that. We have the money and we should have looked at a few more people. Jason Brown for 1.5 million more a year than Grove would have been a good move but we balked. Grove has only played more than 12 games 1 time in 5 years. I question us not bringing in anyone but a Safety, A injury prone Center/Guard , and a lifetime backup lineman. We cut Berger already several years ago. Why did we resign a 31 year old Bell who has only had 1 good year in his career instead of going after Phillips , Leonhard, or Sean Jones. I think BP has gotten lucky and people think he is a genius. Once again no offense to you I just think we could have made a few moves to get better. the Jets have 2 years in a row. So now we will be back in the cellar again

bell has had more than 1 good year but he has only had 1 good and healthy year. But instead you want us to get Leonhard who played a good half year on the best D in the nfl.
reeeelax.
so if cam was the coach last year we would of won 11 because of the weak schedule?
some people around here.
The jets signed everyone last year where did that get them?
OH yea it got them losing at home in week 17 to miss the playoffs to a team that won 1 game the year before.
prozac might help you

You know I'm kinda getting the same feeling.

But the huge amount of respect I have for BP and his troops is justifying my somewhat muffled approach to FA.

I to feel that we should make a hit with at least one top shelf FA to fill a position of need, for years down the road.

But realistically this organization must be given enough time to let them play out their hand to truly see if its a strait, a flush or a royal flush and not a fold.

While I respect your opinion, I would have to disagree on several points. Yes, it was an easier schedule than this year will be. However, we won 1 game the year before and we had to do that one in OT. He never said he was going to turn things around in one year, by taking the easy route of going and grabbing big name/big priced F/A's. He said it would take about 3 years to truly turn things around and become a contender. He has been doing it through smart off-season pick-ups and trades of potential talent, along with smart draft picks. While it does seem frustrating for the average fan or those who watch teams like NY and Wash spend all kinds of $$ on a couple big names (but usually get nothing in return for that investment). But we just need to be patient and let the FO (who know a lot more about talent than us) do their jobs and see how it goes this and next season. If at the end of next year, we haven't improved, then go ahead and call for his head then.

got to know the market value of the player & weigh that against team needs
takes a lot of planning & research before you pull the trigger on a deal

Yes we need some CB talent no doubt. Yes we got some breaks last year in terms of staying healthy and other teams injuries. Still we gutted the team players and coaches last year and in less than 6 months later won our conference in quite some time. We also made the playoffs with some fringe players, cast off from other teams and heavy rookie free agent contibutions. That's called coaching friend. In reality the talent level is not that huge for most teams in the NFL. There are elite teams but the majority have the same talent!
