Usually one of the secrets to free agency is finding the connections on a current team's staff to free agent players who played for a position coach or coordinator or head coach somewhere else along the way.
For example: last year the Pittsburgh Steelers signed 3rd down back / return man Mewelde Moore. Of course, Moore had previously played for the Vikings. And the Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin had been in Minnesota as d-coordinator the year before and saw Moore up close and personal. So the signing of Moore made sense. Moore knew what he was getting into and Tomlin knew what he was getting in Moore.
As I look over our Dolphins staff, we do not have many connections with current free agents. Outside of the Cowboys players, there arent too many. This is due to the fact that many of our assistant coaches have spent their most recent years in college football, and some at smaller colleges.
So, as I was looking this over - much to my surprise and delight, I found that one of the connections we have is our defensive back coach Todd Bowles used to coach CB Leigh Bodden in Cleveland. I was thrilled with this, because I thought that Bodden would be a great addition at a position that we desperately need help. So, my question is...where are Todd Bowles recruiting skills?? How come he cant convince Bodden to take a serious look at us...and why hasnt he convinced the FO that Bodden would be a good signing??
But, before I get too disappointed...maybe its possible that Bowles knows Bodden, and therefore, if the FO chooses NOT to go after him - maybe they DO know what they are doing. Bowles should know Bodden as well as any FA corner available...so I have to believe that if they do not go after him, there is a reason...and its probably the right decision!
Just a thought!
If anyone knows of any other connections between our staff and available free agents (other than the obvious Cowboys players)...please post here. The only other one that I can think of is CB Shawn Springs in Washington was coached by our LB coach George Edwards - he was the d-coordinator in Washington for 2 years I believe.
