Coaching Staff Situation

Can we get a summary please, it's blocked for me.

Here you go:

[h=3]Miami Dolphins mulling direction of assistants (updated)[/h]When the decision was made to fire Joe Philbin, the Miami Dolphins gathered the entire defensive staff and made it clear to everyone: The team would study the idea of moving in another direction with its coordinator and in doing that would be reaching out to candidates both inside and outside the organization.

[Update: And this just in ... there are possible changes on the offensive staff being considered as well.]

And that's what's happening at this hour.

Interim head coach Dan Campbell has talked to players and coaches. Executive vice president Mike Tannenbaum has spoken to defensive coordinator candidates outside the organization.

No decision has been made right now.

A decision may come with the next 24-48 hours.

And, yes, one of the possible decisions the team may make is to keep Kevin Coyle in his current job as defensive coordinator. Yeah, he also might be fired. And he knows that.

(The Dolphins say they are aware some players do not like Coyle. The Dolphins say they are aware some players like Coyle just a lot.)

[Update: Relative to the possible offensive changes, you have to understand the Dolphins are averaging two offensive touchdowns per game. That's not good enough. So no one is safe there, either, for now.]

It's all a matter of what is in the best interest of the organization, I am told. The staff is aware they are being evaluated at this stage, four games into a season that has so far delivered a 1-3 record at the bye week.

I am told if the Dolphins do hire from the outside, they will continue to run a 4-3 defense. And whomever comes in new must agree to learn the current terminology because one person learning new terminology is better than two dozen players learning new terminology.

So what is the point of all this?

The Dolphins sincerely think they can salvage this season. And they see this decision about the defensive staff as pivotal in whether that happens or not.

Mike Tannenbaum is talking to people inside and outside the organization about the defensive coordinator position. Coyle undertands he may be removed.

The update is that the offensive coaches are also being evaluated and there may be changes there as well.

@adamhbeasley Can confirm @RapSheet: Dolphins have reached out to Jim Schwartz, but it's not entirely clear that it was to be their DC. Fluid situation.

I guess Campbell is on the hot seat already

From Albert Breer's Twitter

Dolphins interim coach Dan Campbell had a lengthy meeting with DC Kevin Coyle this morning, met with defensive staff this afternoon. Campbell told Coyle tonight that he isn't making staff changes right now. But situation remains fluid. Players back in bldg tomorrow.

They're all over the **** ing place... they can't even game plan to fire coaches right...lol

Give Campbell a break. He had no exposure to the defensive approach except for conversation with players. Hopefully, the FO is letting him make the decisions.

Update

Campbell has walks out of the coaches meeting covered in blood, looks at Tannebaum and simply says "balls in your court"

They are not making changes just for change. Obviously they think they have a shot at getting back in it and are doing their due diligence. If they bring in coaches from outside the organization it would be one hell of a feat to get the season turned around. Also solidifies just how poor of a job that Philbin did putting together a staff.

Here's to Campbell for taking on a monumental task that is akin to trying to save the titanic from sinking with a 5 gallon bucket. Philbin as a man seemed like a great fellow, but damn, if ignorance is bliss, he was orgasmic.

Obviously, Campbell understands whats in front of him. He is downloading everything from the staff. Tommorrow there is a practice. I would imagine he will download from players.

But to me, the players dont get to act like children here. They are supposed to be professionals! And they get paid lots of money to keep their trap shut!

I for the life of me, never ever understand why players come here, make tons of money and then turn around and act like total jerks! Yes talking bout you Mike Wallace!

Campbell has a lot on his plate and I find it wise he did not fire Coyle yet. Key word, yet. He has to get a grip on everything here and then become the leader he wants to be. If he has no replacement that wants the job then he has to change some things as HC with what he has at his disposal. It is a monumental task and the players dont get to rule what happens here! They dont have to deal with it and they helped create this by acting like babies. There is more here than what the media has put in your eye.

showing up in tennis shoes. 114. wow.

this is why Laser and Coyle are probably going to stick. The weekly preparation for a game are 24/7. at least Laser and Coyle can call their own meetings and know what to do for now. They will get the message that things will have to change. Maybe this is the change that they needed (meaning Laser and Coyle)?

IMO, the problem is the playcalling and schemes used by both the offense and defense. Was this Philbin's doing? We don't know. However, Lazor and Coyle are both 1st time Coordinators with little experience, so having Campbell tell them to change things up may or may not work. Does Lazor know how to call and sustain a running game? Is he able to look at the o-line and see if someone might be better in another position or possibly replaced? Can Coyle change his schemes/playcalling from "All Prevent All The Time" to being more aggressive by going after the QB and not giving WRs a 10 yard cushion? I doubt it. This team will need outside help on both sides of the ball if they want to compete this season.
