Hi Guys,

I live in Australia and watch the odd college game on TV.

Can someone explain what a Redshirt player and a Walk On player is?
Also any others I may have missed.

Thanks

Walkon= playing without a scholarship
Redshirt= injured and sitting out the year to save a year of eligibility

Not 100% sure that is all to the redshirt but that is the general idea.

Players are also redshirted if the coaches dont think they are ready and want to give them an extra year to get prepared

yea, not just if their injured. also if they have alot of talent already at the position, theyll redshirt a player (cant dress for any games) so people can graduate.

walk on is when you dont have a scholarship to play football, but you make the team, there for walkin on the team.

yeah a redshirt is useful to save a year of eligibility for a player, if that player isn't needed for a season, for various reasons, including a lot of depth, inexperience, etc. however, if a player is redshirted for a year, and that player gets on the field EVEN ONCE during that year, his redshirt status is revoked and that entire year goes towards their eligibility. needless to say, redshirting a player is a tough decision to make sometimes
