The Colts are signed former 49ers running back Frank Gore to start free agency Tuesday.
The love for The University of Miami may not end there. Reports are that former Texanswide receiver Andre Johnson could land in Indy, which is coupled with an additional report from the Tribune-Star stating that former Patriots defensive tackle Vince Wilfork could be a target for Indy as well.
What do all of those guys have in common? They played for the University of Miami in the early 2000's, each playing a role on what might have been the greatest college football team of all time. Johnson was Ken Dorsey's No. 1 wideout and Wilfork arguably it's best defensive player. Gore was Clinton Portis' backup on that 2001 squad, averaging 9.3 yards per carry and tacking on 12 touchdowns.
What's the thread connecting all these guys to the Colts? Well, that would be head coach Chuck Pagano, who worked at The U from 1995 to 2000, during which time he served as the lead recruiter for head coach Butch Davis. He likely played at least some role in bringing each of those guys to Miami, not that he had to go incredibly far to do so: Gore is from Coral Gables, Johnson hails from Miami and Wilfork is from Boynton Beach.
