COMMENTARY: Giving Parcells His Due

Several score and a few minutes ago, our daddy Tuna brought forth on this organization a new vision, conceived in big, strong athletes and dedicated to the proposition that football teams are not created equal.

I have a dream, that one day a team will be judged by the work and desire that they put forth and not by the scheduled they are given.

Chad Pennington, 2nd best QB in franchise history? You gotta be kidding me. Bob Griese is in the hall of fame! As much as I love Pennington and can't put forth enough thanks for what he did in turning this team around, I doubt he will ever sniff the Hall.

It's blasphemy to mention Csonka in the same breath as Marino according to the unReal. Now you dare to compare Griese with Pennington... Prepare for the Cleo Lemon argument.

I didn't really notice anything significant in the article other than a lot of mega hyperbole and homerism....

How is it "laughable" that Sparano didn't win coach of the year? He did it with a "pro bowl" quarterback, right? Mike Smith did it with a rookie quarterback....and it's logical to conclude that Parcells had a lot more to do with some of the "coaching" aspects than Thomas Dimitroff did for Mike Smith....Parcells is a HOF coach....Dimitroff has never coached a game in his life....

Parcells has been given his due.....it was give to him by Wayne Huizenga....and several other owners in this league...

But even Parcells has to actually WIN SOMETHING once in a while......something he hasn't done in over 20 years....

Believe it or not...turning a pathetic team into an above average one isn't the hard part....that's the easy part....

Turning an above average team into a legitimate superbowl threat is the hard part.....

It's like the difference between going from a 30 handicapper down to a 15.....then trying to go from a 15 handicapper to a scratch player....

Hell...Mike Holmgren could bounce around the league changing the fortunes of NFL bottom feeders too if he chose to go that route....

The media understands that Parcells has a knack for bringing scum up to the surface.....but they also understand that it typically ends there....

Sometimes homerism is as bad as pessimism ... I actually started feeling a little bit slimy after a few paragraphs.

While agree the article smacks of homerism, your reply seems a bit cynnical, to say the least.

The Cowboys are the only team that Parcells coached that didnt make it to the Conference CG. Two of the four teams hes coached went to the SB and one won it...twice. How many coaches can say that? An incredibly small pct. How is that only "scum reaching the surface"? You go to a Confererence CG and you are one of the elite teams in your conference. Thats all any fan can ask of any coach. Beyond the CGs, there are so many variables its hard to judge what else could have been done.

You can love or hate Parcells, but to say his success in this league has been hinged on the imaginations of NFL beat writers is as absurd as anything I have read on this board or any other.

Where did I say that? lol

I said Parcells is a HOF coach.....

The media adores Bill Parcells.....he's reguarded as one of the best coaches to ever grace the gridiron....not only by the media....but more importantly.... by his peers...

I don't subscribe to the theory that just because you make it to the conference CG and lose neccessarily means you're one of the elite teams in your conference....it means you had a great season.....what did those "elite" teams that only reached the conference championship accomplish immediately after Parcells departure?

It has nothing to do with loving or hating Parcells.....either would require too much effort....the issue with me is he has a tendancy for not seeing it through....so you're right....who knows what else could've been accomplished...

But he isn't coaching anymore.....he's in Miami pretty much with the authority to keep those above his hand selected staff from screwing it up....

The one thing I would disagree with is that Jimmy Johnson contributed, even started some of the disharmony that enveloped the Phins, (Marino) and then by pushing for that boob Wrongstat (wrong for the Phins) pushed us over the edge.

Johnson was the beginning of the problem. His drafts although they did produce some very good talent were much more miss than hit especially on high draft picks. Johnson threw his qb under the bus and was generally a poor leader. That he was able to pick his replacement speaks to another reason Im glad Huzienga is not in charge any more.

It seems the only person associated with Miami that definately gets credit is Parcells. I have not seen any media slight him. I personally dont see Parcells as the personnel god that many on this board do.

I think having Bill Parcells is kind of a double-edge sword.....it seems like a blessing until he leaves.....then it's a curse....

Because when he leaves and takes another gig....he tears down what he had just built up......he takes the personnel men with....the coaches...the players....etc....and you're left stuck wondering "what else could've been accomplished"....

But that's as a coach/GM....

Now....he's moved on to a different task....now his legacy as a VP is being cemented (or glued) however you want to look at it...we'll see...

But Parcells does things his way.....when he wants to....and how he wants to.....and the best thing that Wayne Huizenga ever done for the Miami Dolphins was letting Parcells have the stipulation in his contract that he can do what Parcells wants....when he wants....and how he wants....

Bill Parcells is loyal to Bill Parcells.....and he isn't a personnel God....Heck...there's a few guys in the league I'd rather have in that capacity....

And how would you lure those people into Miami? Esp before last season? NOBODY wanted the job, and those who did... we certainly didn't want.
