COMMENTARY: The Process Was Good. The Results? We'll See.

This article pretty much echos my thoughts on the search for the HC exactly. However, I don't share the apprehension about Cameron's college record for one reason - I demand proof at the NFL level first. Whatever process led him to being the new head coach, I have to have faith that it was based on his being a leader of men and the right guy to lead the team. But I want it to be shown to me.

Ogun went to Indiana when Cameron was there and he said Cameron coached like he didnt want to be there. I think he's the opposite of Saban. I dont think he ever wants to go back to college:lol:

I hope that's true - that we've got a leader right now who is absolutely commited to the task at hand with no baggage from his past to gnaw at his mind. What Saban did will be talked about for a long time, and his reputation is forever sullied. Deservedly, I might add.

Indiana was on a downward spiral talent wise when Cameron got there and he couldn't pull them out of it. Mallory left after going 2-9 and 3-8 in consecutive seasons.

This is very true. Still, in the final analysis, IU wasn't *THAT* far from being respectable, and Cameron only continued the downward spiral. That's a red flag.

Now, maybe he's just a poor recruiter, maybe the state of Indiana just didn't have a ton of talent then, or maybe Notre Dame and Purdue were run by phenomenal recruiters around that time and stripped the state bare of talent. If recruiting was all that held Cameron back at IU, it's a non-issue; money, winning, money, facilities, money and location are what sell NFL players.

Phils take...

I just read phil unwins take on cameron and I find it at least partially flawed...He points out that cameron has done well considering he had the leagues best rb and tight end.. and he wont be able to do that here. To that i say why NOT!? maybe cam was instrumental in MAKING LT and gates the best they could be?We have a guy (brown) that i have always thought should have been used like LT and a tightend who definately could be the big play tightend that gates was...Not to mention that i believe his best work was with the qbs...saying that rivers was gonna do good only because he was the fourth overll selection is Bull! We have seen far to many talented highround qb's go by the way side to think its just about where they get drafted! Notice that brees was considered a BUST till cameron came in and got things going?... not to mention his work with ferrotte and rivers! If there is one thing i think that he will be able to do it is get abother TD or so per game for this offense which would greatly effect our won lose percentage .We didnt lose because of defense...it was the offense's performance that hurt .Getting an offensive minded coach was the right thing to do and did anyone see ANY offensive cordinators BETTER than CAM? I think not ..this is a perfect fit and i am happy with cam as the new headcoach.

Um, I never said that. I said that it's easy to do well when you have that kind of talent. If you read on, however, I also said that even with that much talent, finishing in the top 5 in the NFL in points scored for three straight years was pretty damn impressive, considering the Colts are the only other team to do it, and no one else is even close.

I also never said that Rivers was a lock to do well just because he went 4th overall. I said that he's obviously plenty talented, since he went 4th overall. And it seems fairly clear that the higher you pick a QB, the more likely he is to be successful. If picking a 7th round QB was the surest way to get a good starting QB, everyone would do that. More talent = better chance of success.

Indiana didn't then and doesn't now have a ton of football talent. Whatever we do have gets sucked up by Purdue, Notre Dame, Michigan and Tennessee. Still though, like you pointed out, his record is one to be weary of regardless of recruiting. One point I do like about him is that he is from my hometown. He was an 3 time championship winning QB for the Terre Haute South Braves!

Exactly, any talent in this area goes to different schools than IU to play football. IU has never been known as a good football school and its really hard to recruit a player when you have other Big 10 schools recruiting the same players. Not many people are going to go to IU when you have Purdue, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Wisconsin, and Michigan after you.

Anything that is done at IU is usually dont with second tier players coming out of high school. Every now and then you will find a diamond in the rough, but mostly the kids he coached at IU wern't going to be pros.

One thing to note that not many people know is that one year at IU Cam had the Hoosiers the 6th ranked rushing team in the country. You add that to what he did with LT and I would think Ronnie should be pretty happy this guy is here.
