COMMENTARY: Week 1 NFL Thoughts

I don't agree that teams are built around running backs (i.e Reggie Bush). Earl Campbell, Eric Dickerson, OJ Simpson, Gale Sayers and Barry Sanders never got close to leading their respective teams to championships. Instead ,second tier guys like Emmitt Smith, Roger Craig, Franco Harris, Larry Csonka and Jerome Bettis who were vital parts of a balanced offense did.

Larry Csonka part of a balanced offense?
in 72 we hardly EVER passed the ball.... Griese/Morrall just handed the ball off to Csonka, Morris or Kiick...

I wouldn't call those guys "2nd tier" either....

That was the worst read and the most biased read I have read in a while. I'm sorry but the article has "biased" written all over it.

How is is biased? It covered like 5 or 6 different topics.

Not to mention its supposed to be biased in some sense. It's a commentary. A column. An opinion piece. A writer gives his opinion and backs it up as to why he feels this way. JOURNALISM 101:shakeno: :shakeno:

Emmit Smith is a 2nd tier guy? Larry Csonka is a 2nd tier guy?? :sidelol:

Look, the guys you mentioned Gale, OJ, Earl...etc the reason they didn't win is because there franchises DIDN'T build around them correctly and do it right. It can be done right. As mentioned with Csonka, and John Riggins, Marcus Allen. IF your best player is a RB, you build around him the "right way" and you can be succesful and win championships.

Csonka did share carries with Mercury Morris and Jim Kiick. He was not a franchise back.
And yes I would refer to those guys as second tier, relatively speaking. They were not in the class of the guys I mentioned. They were very good, but also VERY fortunate to be surrounded by excellent supporting casts.
How many yds would Barry Sanders have rushed for playing behind the Cowboys O-line? He probably wouldn't have gotten tired of losing and retired prematurely either.

John Riggins and Marcus Allen could not carry teams, they were vital cogs in their respective offenses.
I wouldn't put them in the same class as Sayers, Dickerson, Sanders, Campbell etc.
Teams were afraid to face those guys because of their ability to take over games.

Barry Sanders had pro bowl offensive linemen in Detroit too. That is a myth and something everyone fails to mention that he had no help in Detroit. Please.

And Barry retired because the Detroit Free Press had a story about how Barry had like 3 or 4 kids NOT from his wife and had them during the time he was married!!! He didn't want the story to become huge outside of the Detroit area so he felt by retiring (something he was considering anyway) that the story would die or be contained (which it was)

Sure... Csonka (1000 + yds) shared carries with Morris (1000 + yds) and Kiick (500 + yds) ... 2500 + yards on the ground is hardly a "balanced offense"

Good read. I couldn't agree more about Edwards, as you'll see from my soon-to-be published AFC preview.

He is the absolute worst coach in the NFL.

He is the reason why NO position coach will ever be promote to head coach again without any coordinator experience.
