I've seen a few mocks that have the phins taking Joe Staley at # 9. But given all I've read about Mueller (he's an avid tape watcher), I don't know that this projection makes sense.

Randy likes to be able to see players in action before pulling the trigger. Based on that, I don't see him taking a chance on Staley at #9. He might move down to the lower part of the first and do it, but at 9 he needs a sure thing, a guy Cam Cameron can pencil in on the first day of training camp. And I doubt that he's seen that Staley is a sure thing from game films (I'm basing this on what I've read in scouting reports: Staley's a workout wonder, but his tapes show that he's not the best player, and maybe not even a LT at the NFL level).

I don't know what the Phins are going to do tomorrow, but then, it'd be pretty *@#$ boring if I knew what was going to happen, as this will be the first draft I've attended in person.

I look forward to the possibilities of Brady Quinn or even Levi Brown. They seem much more likely b/c of their history of solid play and the amount of game film that Mueller has been able to pore over and over and over.

At this point, it's almost got that feel like Christmas Eve did when I was a kid...I've got some really good expectations. And that's not something I've felt about the Phins in a long time :).

I'm hoping for either Quinn or a trade down to pick up Staley myself.
 
Here is what I think will happen. All of the guys that we really want are going to be off the board in the first 8 picks....so I think Randy is going to take his full 15 minutes and try to trade down....somewhere between the 12th and 15th spot. I think someone is wanting Patrick Willis in the worst way and they will deal with us to move up to get him. I think we could be looking at Ted Ginn Jr., or Staley with a trade down pick. Maybe we could pick up an extra third round pick to trade down 3-5 spots? Can't wait for tomorrow, whatever happens it should be good. :tongue:
 
The assumption or belief that Staley doesn't look good on film is not true. His quick feet and athleticism are very apparent on film. Mueller has talked about picking players who jump out at you on film and are fun to watch. While it is not easy for an OL to qualify under that standard, Staley comes closer than the other OLs IMO.

I'm OK picking Staley would prefer to do it in the teens after picking up an extra 2nd to move down.

Having at least 3 picks in the 1st 2 rounds helps. :cooldude:

Staley on film: pass protect yes. Athleticism yes. Run block questionable. Pass pro may be paramount for a LT, but run blocking still counts in my book, especially if you're talking about a top 10 pick.

I'm with you on your second point- if Staley's your guy, trade down and get value with him, get that extra pick. It wouldn't shock me if we slid in the 1st and took QB John Beck. At some point I'm going to have to shut up about Beck, just not yet. Meachem, Bowe, Jamaal Anderson (if he slides),
Brown, and of course Ginn are all good targets for a trade down, which I hope that we do. Assuming, of course, that we don't get Quinn.
