With all the, trash the season vs. keep winning, I think a couple of you may find this interesting.......

1st Round Draft Position Previous four years(02-05)

Lions | Patriots
10th | 32nd
7th and 30th | 21st and 32nd
2nd | 13th
3rd | 21st

The Detroit Lions have a combined record of 17-42 to date. The Patriots are 43-16 to date. This should rest any threads about trashing the season. Although I am sure my fellow finheaven posters will point something I overlooked out.....

nothing is wrong with what Matt Millen did in Det. they have players that should win.
Well 3 straight drafts with a WR in the top 10 is a bit off. Especially with more pressing needs. You could say he was trying compensate for a previous mistake in Harrington, or possibly Rodgers. I don't exactly know which because neither has show much to date.

yea its Odd. but he also got a good RB-DE-DT-LB-OL. put that with 3 talented WRs, a few good Free Agent signings such as Damian Woody, Kennoy Kennedy, Marcus Pollard. The guy has brought in some quality players. i thought mooch was a good coach, after this i dont.

I think Harrington has got a bum rap. Sure he sucked his first season, but he was thrown right in. He looks pretty good when Roy Williams is healthy. Although that could just be Roy.

Yeah in others areas he did a decent job. Only disagreement is that line seems to be regressing, but after seeing Houck in action it can be a problem with coaching. I guess you could look at Woody with the Pats and now with the Lions also as an example. I think you could be right about Mooch though. I just don't know how Harrington is going to succeed if he can't in this offense.

You fail to look beyond the first pick. In each of the past several drafts, NE has had multiple picks in each of the first 3 rds. When they have two firsts and a player isn't there that they covet, they trade for future high rd picks from other teams.

That would be fine, but many of the posters are arguing about what position we would select in the first round. I was pointing out the first round only.

All of you that want to throw the season: would you like to erase the happiness that you felt from winning games like the Oakland one, for a spot or two better pick? No way, I wouldn't... I wouldn't care if we won out and didn't make the playoffs, winning unites a team, and that would make us a better team for next year.

He has a bum rap because he sucks.

Nice post pointing out the differances in winning and losing orgs. Play to win.

While I agree with the premise (don't tank or wish for your team to) there is a logic flaw in the post - it's circular reasoning.

Meaning that the Patricks picked 32nd BECAUSE their record was so good.

And "last four years" really isn't enough time to gauge even the first of those drafts, let alone last year's.

But I agree with the premise. With a few notable exceptions, smarter teams make up for lack of high draft picks. And stupid teams squander them.

Agreed an I understand your point. My point is that you mentioned NE's success - and I believe that comes from the fact that they have multiple picks in each of the first three rounds year over year. This gives them the flexibility to adjust draft position in order to get a target player - or trade the pick for a higher round pick the following year.

I really hate the Patsies, but I admire their front office.
