Anyone know the formula? I'm pretty sure we brought in too many free agents to recieve any this year; Carter,Holliday, Shulters, Frerotte and Tebucky to name a few. Morlon Greenwood is the only guy i can think of who produced that we lost. I'm pretty sure that means we won't be getting any extra picks. Someone correct me if i'm wrong.

i think we deserve one for Knight and maybe Greenwood because he got a massive contract...but so didnt Todd Wade

If Miami signed more qualifing free agents than it lost, Miami gets no picks. Qualifying free agents are ones that get to the end of their contracts and sign elsewhere. Miami won't get picks for guys who were traded or cut, and players traded for or cut by other teams don't count against Miami.

Does anybody have a count of qualifying free agents lost and signed?

No one knows the precise formula, which bothers me. Not even GM's can 100% predict what compensatory picks they'll recieve. Why should this thing be a secret? Inevitably, some guy comes in here and argues with me "it is very simple .. this guy with a website regularly gets the compensatory picks 91% correct". Well, if it was that simple, he, and anyone else that wanted to, would get it 100% correct, wouldn't they?

I thought that layperson got it more like 97-98% correct over the past several years, but I'm not just replying to quibble over percentages.

I think it's important that teams not know the precise formula because I don't think teams need to behave in a way that takes for granted they're getting particular comp picks. Being able to forecast with 100% accuracy could make certain teams in certain situations more likely to pass on re-signing a player because they want the pick, and that isn't the way the system is supposed to work. I would far rather the NFL hire an outside auditor to ensure that the secret formula has been applied properly if there is any concern about the league manipulating the picks for a hidden agenda.

ETA: A far bigger concern than the ones I have mentioned involve player compensation issues. The compensatory pick system clearly takes contract size into account. Players should be paid what they are worth, not an amount calculated to manipulate the compensatory pick that may be awarded.

Well Morlon was not cut, his contract was up, same with Sammy Knight. Kevin Carter was cut, so was Tebucky Jones, so was Lance Schulters... We might actually get one.

Was Holliday cut? I think he was because he signed a long term deal in KC.

We may even receive 2!

Against us:
Frerotte
Ephraim
Stockar
Spragan
Glenn

We lost:
Greenwood
B Robinson
s Knight

lost : Knight and Greenwood were the only significant losses.
gained: Lance shulters, kieth traylor Vonnie Holliday, Donnie Spragan, tebucky Jones, Stockar McDougle, Kevin Carter, and Gus Frerrote as starters or significant role players.
answer: not even close to having a chance to qualify to be able to get a shot at receiving a comp draft pick.

You guys dont get it. Guys that are CUT dont count! i.e. Schulters, Traylor, Holliday, Jones, Carter all were CUT and DO NOT COUNT as "Free agents signed".

In contrast, Greenwood, Knight and Robinson were not cut, their contracts expired.

So its really:

Lost: Greenwood, Knight, Robinson

Gained: Frerotte, Spragan, McDougle ??

We certainly have a chance- Morlon and Sammy signed big contracts.

Did we cut Ayanbendajo (sp)? I think there's two of them and i'm pretty sure one of them was a special teams ace this year.

It's not a matter of comparing the size of the contracts. If you gain as many players as you lose or do better than that, you don't get comp picks. In some years, there are non-compensatory extra picks given out with the remainder of the 32 picks not used for comp picks. Those are given out to the worst teams, though.

I do believe he was traded. I think it was to the Bears.
