I'm confused about the value of Trent Green. The Chiefs, who just went to the playoffs and had a chance to get there again, just dismissed one of the league's most consistent veteran quarterbacks. At the same time he was being trashed, Green is a good guy to have around because of his savvy and wisdom of playing quarterback, but coming off a concussion and at 37, it's doubtful he'll be around much longer. Green will be the our starter come Week 1, but we should also pay close attention to who has a better camp, Lemon or Beck. If we are out of contention, it's time to see what our youngsters can do. Beck has some special skills as a potential second-round steal, and the grizzled Green can play a big role in grooming the BYU product in the short term.

So, what exactly are you confused about?

man i wish dan marino was trapped in a young qb's body so we can start winning superbowls

The think I like about Trent is that he gives us the most continuity at the QB position that we've had in a while. I guess I felt the same about Daunte but then again there was a tiny nugget in the back of my mind saying "this could all blow up," and coincidently, it did. With Trent Green I know what we're getting. We're getting a legitimate solid starting NFL QB who will come in, take care of the football, lead the offense, and make some big throws when we need him too. He's not going to have any of those guady Peyton Manning games (those days are past Trent) but he won't go Joey Harrington on us and throw costly pick after costly pick. We should get a nice 3000 yard, 20 TD 10 INT season.

1 injury in how many consecutive seasons and now we're questioning his durability. Give me a break.

Well he is 37, you're always a liability at the age. I'm not saying he will get hurt, but if our OL plays like they did last year he will.

With that said, revert back to me previous post, I think Green will be fine.

Native, I'm confused as to what you're confused about, too....

But here's the deal....

Green gives us something that we haven't had here is a while. Continuity at the QB position. Is he Dan Marino in his prime ? No...is he better than any of the 10 or 11 QBs since ? Yes...

The negatives are simple...his age, his injury history. I say injury history because of the nature of that injury (concussion). It has been shown over and over again in the NFL that one concussion leads to more. Whether that trend continues with Green remains to be seen. But it is a concern.

The positives are simple as well. His ability as a QB, his knowledge of Cam's system, his veteran leadership and his reputation as a good person off the field.

How much will Green's injury and/or age affect his play ? That's the $64,000 question...none of us know that just yet...

I know people are worried about Trent's age and everything but why is he any different than a 37 year old Favre? Favre's numbers have been worse in the recent years. Plus Favre has played almost 2 times as many games as Green.... Favre's 241 to Green's 112 so as far as health is concerned I would say that Favre has taken much more hits than Green has in their careers. So I think he will do just fine.

I recently watched last years playoff game between the Chiefs and Colts. Overall, I thought Trent looked pretty good. In the first couple of drives alone I think I saw three dropped passes. On the TD drive culminated with a beautiful toss to Gonzales, he was lights out. He did appear to force a few throws, but that was after the Chiefs were down and it was obvious Larry Johnson was not going to get anywhere. I saw nothing to make me think that his skills or headwork were diminished. Throws were crisp, pocket awareness was solid, no staring down receivers...I was impressed.

As an aside, his throws in that game looked far better than anything I saw from DC last year (with the exception of the throw to Welker along the right sideline in the PITT game--THAT was beautiful.) He throws a nice-looking ball. Precise and very catchable but with excellent velocity. And it comes out quickly. We should have grabbed him from St. Louis. Geez Wanny. You passed up Brees, Green and Hasselback for Fiedler, Lucas and Feeley.

I dont't know if anyone watched KC's last two games of the season as they were replayed on NFL Network the last couple of weeks, but Trent did not look good at all. He was throwing picks and got lucky several times as more could have been picked off. I am a big fan of the pick up because a 4th rounder is usually a "30 percent chance of performing guy". I wanted stability at qb, something we havent had in a long long time. The most important thing is he is a probowl qb and there is much that will rub off on our young John Beck. Once he takes the feild in '09, the debate will be over. If we acquired a younger guy like Atlanta's backup, we would have a qb debate every year. This way, Green will be too old to compete for the spot. Worst case scenario is that Green turns out to be Favre and we have to groom Beck a little early. At that point our season will be lost and the only thing we will want to see is Beck come in and develop. Its a win-win situation as far as interest goes.

Okay, to unconfuse you. Green got hurt last year and they had a lifetime backup outplay him which caused them to think maybe he is not worth 8 million. They have thier Qb of the future drafted last year and feel for the money Huard could do a decent job if called upon. Green is about to turn 37 which is not the prime of most qb's and even when Green has been a pro bowler they still dont have one playoff win to show for it. The Chiefs basically decided there would be some competition at QB and wanted Green to take a pay cut. Being the team player that he is he balked at competing or taking a pay cut to stay with the team that made him fairly rich. I agree that Green had been consistent until last year but the Chiefs gave him plenty of time to recover and did not try to run him out of town but Green would not do the same favor to his own team that he did for the dolphins for whatever reason. I guess the chiefs which had not advanced in the playoffs with a a very well paid pro bowl qb did not mind playing hardball and felt pretty secure with the other qb's on thier roster. I think they will be quite okay with Brodie Croyle but it was a fairly bold move.

I guess you watched the game from a differant angle than myself. He was pretty damn bad that game and made quite a few mistakes.

Age is usually more of a factor than games played, otherwise backups would play into thier forties with regularity.

That says it all, unbelievable.

Yeah thats true. But if you had to bet on whose body is probably in better condition Favre or Green I think Id go with Favre. They are both the same age but we all know Favre has taken A LOT more hits. Favre has that ankle problem that I think he just had surgery on or needs surgery, and he has that thumb problem. You cant deny that taking hits after a while definitely takes a toll and in that case Green has taken a lot less than Favre who is the same age.
