I remembered that conversation this morning because that’s what should have happened in the very first conversation between the Dolphins and Jeff Fisher. If, as both Michael Silver of Yahoo! Sports and now Adam Schefter of ESPN report, Fisher wanted full control over the 53-man roster and Dolphins owner Stephen Ross was unwilling to take such control away from G.M. Jeff Ireland, that shouldn’t have been an eleventh-hour dealbreaker. It should have been a non-starter.

Really, what else would there have been to discuss if Fisher definitely wanted full control and Ross, who had already promised it contractually to Ireland, wasn’t inclined to give Fisher full control? This isn’t one of those last-minute details like where Fisher’s parking space will be. It’s a fundamental cook-the-meals-shop-for-the-groceries term that should have been resolved before any further negotiations occurred.
Perhaps Fisher led the Dolphins to believe in the early conversations that the issue of total control wouldn’t kill the deal, using Miami’s interest to get the best possible terms from the Rams. After all, with Fisher’s agent’s son serving as the point man for the Rams, Kevin Demoff wouldn’t have been able to cough up whatever Fisher wanted unless there was someone else who was willing to give Fisher what he wanted. Otherwise, it would have appeared that Marvin Demoff had gotten his son to roll over.

Regardless, the blame ultimately falls to Dolphins owner Stephen Ross. Either Ross failed to make it clear from the get-go that Ireland’s power never would be given to Fisher, or Ross failed to insist on an immediate commitment from Fisher as to whether the power issue would ultimately prevent Fisher from choosing the Dolphins.
Bottom line? This isn’t an issue that should have been resolved on Friday. It should have been resolved in the first communication between the Dolphins and Fisher. And it’s yet another high-profile failure by Ross, whose best play at this point could be to sell the team.

If Ross wasn't willing to toss Ireland, then you have to question just how badly he really wanted fisher.

Fisher was useing us for more money from the Ram's. It worked he's getting 7 mil a year.

Guess it was one of those situations where both sides felt the other would cave eventually

If I were Fisher I'd absolutely want control over Ireland/personnel decisions. No doubt about it.

Agreed, he should've done his homework and known that at the VERY LEAST, Fisher didn't want to potentially be stuck with another Vince Young. That fact that the courtship became so high profile and public makes the fallout even that much more worse. I almost wish he hadn't courted Fisher to begin with...that way it would've saved us the embarrassment and subsequent thrashing that we've been receiving nation wide.

Fisher was clearly his #1 choice after gruden/cowher, its that splash he needed to bring some excitement back to south florida. All these other assistant coaches arent splashes.

I agree with Florio.

That was Ross's one big flub during this mess. I don't mind Ross not wanting to give final say to a head coach. That usually doesn't work out, BUT if thats the structure Ross wants and the structure that Fisher doesn't want than why wait a week for Fisher to decide?

I think that is the main problem and honestly, looking to make a splash with the HC is the very definition of insanity around here. looking for the "name" that provides the biggest flash has failed us since Satan was here. we need to find the right guy, even if he isn't the splash ticket sales needs.

What does it hurt to keep negotiations open? Maybe some deal breaker pops up with the Rams and he decides to take the Dolphins offer.

It sounds like what happened here was Fisher asked for full control, Steve Ross politely told him that it wasn't going to happen, but then told him that the offer was still on the table.

In what way, shape or form is that a dumb move?

Ross offered him 8 Million a year...Fisher was never coming here, he just used us for leverage in getting the most out of the Rams.

while i do agree with that, at the same time the thought of gettin another sparano v2.0 scares me. You knew what you were gettin with fisher, maybe hes a lil old and been in the league for a very long time, but the guy is still motivated because he came so close to winning a superbowl and lost. When you come that close, it hurts much more than not going at all.

The "name" guys are that for a reason- quality coaches who have track records and can be the alpha dog to run things properly. I'd like to see Ross give the right HC control over Ireland, but that probably won't happen. Maybe the definition of insanity is thinking that Ross is best served trying to get the best possible HC candidate while forcing him into a bad situation where he has to work under Ireland and rely on him for the final word on personnel decisions.

no, fisher used both teams to get the best deal possible for the team that he was going to pick, sscheftner and mort are reliable, they said it was almost a sure thing he was coming to miami, but the ross not budging on personnel to fisher on final say was the deal breaker.

Completely agree and I would submit that mentality has failed since Shula was here. If you want a full stadium, start winning.
