The assumption in all of the playoff scenarios involving the Dolphins assumes that the Broncos will win the AFC West. A Chiefs win over the Seahawks today keeps the Chiefs within one game of the Broncos. And who do the Broncos play the week following the Dolphins? A Sunday night primetime game at Kansas City. And such a loss to KC puts the AFC West up for grabs. Whether the Broncos win or lose to the Dolphins, the AFC West leader will be determined by their game against the Chiefs.

I have no idea whether teams "look past" an opponent or whether the concept of a "trap game" exists, but I think the timing of the Dolphins game vs the Broncos couldn't be better. Plus I think the Chiefs can get to 10-6 even with losses to the Seahawks and Broncos, so I view the Dolphins competing for either the division or one remaining wildcard spot. So a Chiefs win today could cause the Broncos to "look past" the Dolphins and towards the Chiefs the following week.

Do you think the cheifs are legitimately a better team then the broncos? If so you can run with this, but have fun defending that concept... If you like 99% of the nfl viewers see the broncos as a better team then the cheifs then no this would not help, it would just advance more competition for the afc wildcard which is currently a log jam... I prefer the dolphins to have options for getting in, this scenario in my mind constricts those options

Of course the Broncos are better than the Chiefs. But the Broncos have two very physical games against the Rams and Dolphins and the win that matters most to them is at the Chiefs. And unless you think that the Chiefs are likely to at best finish 9-7, which I don't, then the number of games the Chiefs win is irrelevant to the Dolphins as the Chiefs own the tiebreaker.

Don't know if I believe it but playoffstatus.com says a kc loss only improves our chances by 2%.
But every bit helps. Go Seahawks

At this point I don't care.

I know one thing: if we go to the playoffs I hope Santa brings me one more shot at the Chiefs. Bastards.

But to get a shot at the Chiefs likely requires them to win their division and hence defeat the Seahawks!!! Unless of course the Dolphins win the AFC East, in which case who cares if the Chiefs win or lose today!!!

Nah, looking at the remaining schedule it's entirely possible for the Chiefs to be 9-7 with a loss today... While it'd be nice to have a magical run at the division, we need to go 10-6 or 11-5 and secure that 5 seed.

While a Chiefs win today slightly decreases the Dolphins wildcard chances, it may help the Dolphins division chances if it shifts the Broncos focus more towards their following game at Kansas City.

If the belief is that the Patriots are invincible once again this year and that the Dolphins are only playing for a wildcard, then, yes, go Seahawks.

You might be right. You can start to play around with the playoff simulator, it only starts week 13 but it does look like both the Chiefs and Broncos will get in regardless and as long as we get to 10-6 we should be in too. So if the Broncos overlook us thinking about the Chiefs and we're able to upset them that could be our ticket to a first round bye.

If the Pats lose today our next game will be huge because with my best guesses using the simulator we'll end up playing each other in the first round, its just a matter of where.

I believe the 2%. The Broncos schedule includes games against the Dolphins, @Stl, @Cin, @KC and @SD. While unlikely, if KC wins the AFC West and the Dolphins defeat the Broncos, then suddenly the Dolphins own the tiebreaker against all AFC West contenders. Unlikely, but 3 of those games are in cold weather and the Broncos running game is decimated. Are the Broncos really a 13-3 team this year? Not sure.

Just curious if you believe that teams "look ahead", not necessarily by intent, but as a natural psychological phenomenon. Also, do you think the Patriots are more vulnerable this year or is their 30-3 record since 2010 in the 2nd half of the season still an obstacle for the Dolphins to contend with?

Falling backwards into the playoffs or sneaking on someone else's coattails because they beat a team you couldn't is never a good plan, teams that do usually are one and done. The path the Dolphins are on where the show growth week to week as opposed to the play good early and fizzle at the end of season as it usually the case, means they can control their own destiny just by winning the games they're supposed to win and stealing one from either the Broncos or Patsies which i truly believe they will

Chiefs are tough. If they beat Seahawks today I expect them to beat Denver in 2 weeks and take control of the division. They dominated In Denver but came up short. Denver has no running game and that is going to bite them in the ass as it gets cold
