The Dolphins have spoken several times with quarterback Chad Pennington but have neither committed to him for 2010 nor closed the door on him as a backup.

Aside from Pennington's shoulder concerns and cost, one issue the team has pondered is how Pennington's presence would affect presumed starter Chad Henne.

General Manager Jeff Ireland said Henne is Miami's future at quarterback, but that doesn't mean he has arrived. Facing only his second season as a starter with a team that is still building, there is a chance Henne might struggle at some point in 2010.

The Dolphins are aware having Pennington on the roster might place pressure on Henne and even create something of a shadow over Henne if things aren't going well.

I remember ireland saying this when they were pondering bringing JT back. That sometimes vets can slow down rookie progress. I'm all for chad p being a back up here but then the question lies who goes thigpen or white. I say white has to play a different position while learning qb to be worth keeping

The only way Henne will grow is if he is pushed.

He didn't do anything worth being just HANDED the starting job. Whether he is the future or not, the guy has to be pushed whether it's Penny or Thigpen. Being handed the job after what he did last season will not push him hard enough

What did Penny do after the BALT game to be named starter for 09?

Penny should be allowed to move on and Henne given the reigns. Flacco, Ryan and now Sanchez are handed the job for their respective teams. Henne did more with less last year.

Penny lead the 08 Dolphins to a 11-5 record, 7 wins against teams that were .500 or less. :ponder:
