Now i know there are alot of knee jerk kinda post after last week. But this Dline is only going to get better and with Anderson back at OLB i see more pressure from them on Qb's i def think Anderson will help Porter get to the Qb more.

Now i do not think this team can LEAD the league in sacks this year but i think they have the capability of being in the top 5. We have 9 now as a team 3 in the first game 4 last week and 2 in the cards game so multiple sacks in each game.

I think this is very possible...Porter will have double digits i think Langford will have 10 sacks. Merling, Roth, Anderson, Starks, Holiday, Ferguson thats alot of guys who can get after it.

what do you guys think?

No, the Dolphins will not be in the top 5 in sacks..... There are a lot of teams that can get to the QB.

Hell, the Eagles had 9 sacks alone last week in one game (The same number as the Dolphins in 3 games).... And the Eagles should have had more but they went for the strip instead.

I said before the season started that NE's O-line is overrated.. They were getting killed at the end of last season in the final 5 games, and in the playoffs.. Luckily they had a QB like Brady to get to the SB.. I wouldn't put too much in getting some sacks against New England.

Yeah, the NFC East has been the sack leaders for awhile with the Giants, Cowboys and Eagles occupying that division. ALL great sack teams.. Miami will not come close to beating any of those 3 teams out.

Then you have Tennessee which has a great defense and a stout very strong O-line.. I don't know why dolphins fans underrate that team.. I have seen a few people here blow off Tennessee, but you're nuts. That running back they drafted is a stud with almost 300 yards already averaging 5.5 yards a carry, and running behind that line. And their defense is incredible.

But anyway, back on topic.....

Minnesota probably has a top 3 D-line in the NFL.. Their sacks will greatly increase..

And you have a lot of teams that can get to the QB, Like Tampa who had the #2 rated defense last year, Chicago, Steelers (who clearly have a better defense than Miami), ditto for the Packers.. and more.

I think it will be an accomplishment if Miami can barely squeeze in the top 10.. Remember, we are rebuilding here. I see a few of the young players getting a little worn down near the end of the season as they are not used to such a long grind of a schedule.. That's normal.

I see Miami drafting a very good front 7 player next year. One who can really get to the passer. And maybe adding another guy in free agency.. Next year, watch out. Top 5 will be more of a possibility then imo.

You know what ? I think Miami has a much better chance of being in the top 5 for "ALLOWING" the least sacks..

Reasons being-

1. The O-line is much improved this year.

2. We have much more of a short passing game so passes are released quicker.

3. We are more of a running team than passing team.

4. Miami hasn't given up very few sacks so far, only 5 in 3 games.. ( the only game where they have given up a good amount of sacks was in the first game, and that's understandable for a young O-line who are new together as they need some time to gel)

I really think this dolphins team can be a top 5 in sacks this year.

What makes you think that we won't be top 5 this year since the year has not ended. The dolphins have been consistently getting at least 2-3 sacks per game in average against teams with good offensive lines.

The Steelers only had 1 sack before their game against the steelers and were 31st and suddently jumped to top 10 status.

I agree, to an extent. I don't know that we will make top 5, but top 10 is definitely a possibility. I don't necessarily agree with 'barely squeeze in' though.

Looking at the past five years, the 5th ranked team had 42, 44, 46, 45, and 42 sacks. That's an average of 43.8 sacks. The 10th ranked team had 37, 40, 41, 40, and 38 sacks for an average of 39.2 sacks.

The 5th ranked team had an average of about 2.75 sacks per game. The 10th ranked team had 2.45 sacks per game. Right now we're sitting at 3 sacks per game.

I also agree with you that our rookies will probably start getting tired towards the end of the seasons and be less productive. In the middle of the season, say games 6 through 12, I think they can make up for some of the lack of production that we might see in the last few games. I think it's reasonable to assume we'll see improvement by them every week through week 12 or 13.

now, while the average sacks may seem attainable, I expect to see more sacks as a league this year. You'll notice that there were 2 years with 42 sacks at the #5 spot which pulls down the average. I think that after seeing what the Giants did in the SB last year, teams will try to copy that and the #5 spot will be a little higher than the 43.8 average. I expect it to be 46 this year. That's 2.875 sacks/game. Can we do that? I wouldn't count on keeping our 3 sacks/game average up for the whole year.

I don't know that top 10 will be as much of a stretch as Greyboy thinks though. I think 2.5 sacks per game is very attainable.

i don't think it will happen this year - mainly b/c of our outside LBers. porter is good coming off the edge - but roth? not so much.

we are built this year to stop the run - as was evident in our draft and defensive depth chart. not counting porter, our sacks have either been brute strength up the gut or coverage sacks. we will need that edge threat - at both outside LB positions - before we reach that goal.

i keep seeing charlie anderson's name - and i like him on the team - but he has done nothing thus far in his career for us to think he will be a pass rushing threat. as of right now, he isn't any kind of threat. given some experience and more games under his belt - who knows. quentin moses is a much better pass rusher but the guy is kind of soft. hopefully anderson will live up to the hype and moses will toughen up so we can focus on other areas come next draft.

i am personally hoping for the staff to make merling an OLB - which is what i thought we drafted him for. i think a 270 lb merling would be equally excellent off the edge against the run and pass. him and langford were outstanding picks - but langford needs to play the run a little better.

you don't get top 5 sacks numbers with D linemen in the 3-4. that comes from the LBers. next year - and especially the year after - i see our D being sick. but until parcells finds the next LT incarnate - i wouldn't get my hopes up.

Completely agree with you. I also agree that we will probably be in the top 5 for allowing the least amount of sacks

Does anybody know where there's a listing of sacks allowed my all the teams? I checked on team offensive stats on nfl.com, but didn't see anything.
