Hear me out on this one. I agree that it is stupid, but hey, it might work.

We all know that the #1 overall pick is going to merit a guaranteed contract of $25-30 million. We also know that this year, there is no consensus #1 guy like a Peyton Manning, Carson Palmer, Reggie Bush, etc. I believe that this draft has 4 elite prospects: Long, Long, McFadden, and Dorsey.

Except for McFadden, I'd be thrilled with either Long or Dorsey.

So here's the stupid idea: If we can't find a trade-down partner, and only if no one wants to trade up, what if we let the clock expire when we're on the clock, like Minnesota did a few years ago? What if we do it twice? I wouldn't mind picking up Jake Long at the #3 overall money.

We'd still get an elite prospect, but wouldn't have to pay the #1 overall pick money.

Flame away!!!

It's a neat idea, I've never heard of letting the clock wind down. what happens if time does expire?

Minnesota accidentally let the clock expire a few years ago. What happened was the team that selected below them ran up and picked a player. I belive the next two teams selected players and then Minnesota finally made their selection.

They didn't forefeit their selection, rather, they just picked a few slots later. Lemme find a youtube of it. It was crazy.

Weird idea, but if it means we don't have to spend a QB/RB/WR's level of money to a DT/DE, I can live with it. Rather get some value out of it 1st but can't be the worst that could happen.

I actually had the same crazy idea. It makes sense to me, so it probably isn't a good idea.

1) No agent would consider our pick to be anything other than #1 overall and would negotiate accordingly.

2) Reggie Bush wasnt a consensus #1 overall pick (ask Houston)

3) Vikings were in such a state of bad FO mgmt they failed to get their pick in, in back to back drafts. Egg on the face indeed!

Yeah any agent worth his weight in $100 bills would call shenanigans on us and hardline negotiate as if it was the #1 selection.

Nice idea, but it wouldn't work. It would result in a #3 pick getting #1 money or a very long holdout...

I agree, to some degree, with this statement.

But look at this scenario: We let the clock expire, and St. Louis takes Chris Long, the Falcons take Matt Flynn, the Raiders grab McFadden, and then we take Dorsey at the #4 slot. Dorsey's agent is gonna WANT #1 overall money, but he ain't gonna get it, cause he got drafted fourth. So, we give him a sizeable payday for the #4 overall pick. At least we're not paying a DT #1 overall money.

I'm in love with Dorsey too, but the guaranteed money he'll ask for as the #1 overall will be ludicrous.

Sums up both sides of this discussion! Kind of like the scene in Caddyshack...""I ain't payin' fifty cents for no coke; oh well then you aint gettin no coke"

They made out best of the 2-3 teams that picked before them. Kevin Williams is a animal.

The best bet is to start negotiating with both Longs and Dorsey asap, and have a contract finalized by draft day! At this point I would be happy with either one of the three!

I don't have a problem with negotiating with one of these guys, but I hope we use the fully alloted time, make team's sweat by spreading rumors we are going to take McFadden or Ryan first and then wait for teams to call to trade up with us. I think we need extra picks so hopefully we can find someone we can trade down with.

It is a bit strange, but an incredibly backwards way of doing things - better to pick the player we want and work with the NFLPA to have some sort of workable rookie cap solution like other sports.

That's not true. OUR draft position would determine how he was paid, not when he was selected. Our pick is the #1, he'll get paid as the #1 or we'll have a hold-out of biblical proportions on our hand! The only way we could get a player for less than #1 money is to trade the pick, not try to cheat our way out of it. No agent is going to let us get away with that, and I'll guarantee that the NFLPA would back them up on that one!
