I am a former police investigator (17years) from Tennessee. I think the media has possibly misrepresented the entire La'el Collins situation with comments like he is being question in the murder case of his former girlfriend. These type headlines imply he is a suspect or a person of interest. It is routine to interview everyone who has or has had a relationship with the victim. Parents, siblings, friends, coworkers, neighbors, etc. Dozens of people are interviewed in these type cases who are at no time a suspect or person of interest. Police are trying to learn about the victims life and put the pieces of the puzzle together. I saw a report where police has stated he is neither a suspect or person of interest. It appears from the outside he was simply question for routine reasons related to any investigation of this type. If so, he has paid a severe price for simply having a past relationship with the victim.

That is funny. We are all so quick to judge about putting a murderer on our team.

Imagine the opposite scenario.
Lael Collins has worked his whole life to be in the NFL.
Then this completely random tragedy happens and his whole life is shattered.

Thanks for your unique professional perspective.

However, I have a strange feeling that this thread may into Professor Plum, in the Billiard Room with the lead pipe by page 10....

I've been thinking the same thing the whole time. I read where they said he's not a suspect, but in the media he's being treated as if he somehow was going to be listed as a suspect. It's sad for the kid, but could be potentially good for us, should we get the opportunity to snag him for peanuts.

The fact that the victim was pregnant with what has been reported to be Mr.Collins' child, and he was set to make millions of dollars makes him a person of interest.

Fair enough but you cannot ignore two key facts:

1. The victim was close to him and crimes like this are often of "passion", putting him in a precarious spot. I'm going to guess parents and neighbors are not prime suspects in any such crimes and rarely turn out to be responsible.

2. No one in the NFL threw a 7th rounder at him. That speaks volumes for someone who is reportedly NOT a suspect or person of interest.

I just think based on the limited information they had to go on executives and front office people got flashbacks of Rae Carruth and simply ran for the hills.

Seriously can you blame them?

Another thing that hasn't been mentioned is that collins turned down millions of dollars to return to LSU his senior season. most people who murder their gf and baby to save money aren't the type of people who turn down money to return to school.

My dad who is an LSU alum and rabid fan says that everyone thinks collins is a stand up guy who would never do something like this.

I think even the poleece are aware of the N F L DRAFT and...if it turns out all they wanted was basic fact finding et cetera -- they coulda shoulda waited a few days until the draft was OVER!

Am I wrong?

Actually I didn't mean to "thumbs up this". Wow, you think you know the "motive" of the killer and it is "saving money" you say. That's funny!

Anyone who's watched a few episodes of "The First 48" would know that.
As an investigator of 17 years, you probably also know that it can sometimes take weeks, even months, before a suspect is charged even if the police have had him on their radar the entire time.

I saw a report where police has stated he is neither a suspect or person of interest. It appears from the outside he was simply question for routine reasons related to any investigation of this type. If so, he has paid a severe price for simply having a past relationship with the victim.
And I saw a report where he had tried to come in and be questioned but the police said they weren't ready for him. Isn't it also possible that the police are gathering evidence on Collins in the hopes to catch him in lies?

I'm not saying Collins is guilty of anything but I don't see how the media, bad as it is sometimes, is at fault here. Collins might very well be a victim of circumstances, and that's a shame for him if he is, but life doesn't come with guarantees. On the other hand, Collins may not be a victim of any sort. We'll have to wait and see. In the meantime, any contract we offer him should contain some language that protects the team should Collins be charged.

Is it not a possible and plausible motive?

JTC111 you''re better than that I think. It doesn't even matter if the person's thought is right by chance, it's kind of strange think you know the reason for a murder you know nothing about, and then state it like fact to make another point.

The point of my post was not to say he is innocent or guilty but just to point out that simply being interviewed in a investigation does not automatically make him a suspect or even a direct person of interest in the crime itself. As for the media saying he is called in for questioning in the murder of his girlfriend implies he is a suspect which may not be the case.

This is what I was wondering, I understand the police have a job to do and catching this killer is their #1 priority for the sake of the victims family. But if a guy was truly not a suspect and they were just looking for basic information, why were they so insistent he leave Chicago and come back right in the middle of one of the biggest events in this guys life.

I've never read where the police said Collins had to rush back for the interview. I think urgency on Collins part came from the NFL and media saying he would drop or not be selected before he talked to authorities. At that point I think Collins and his agent were the ones pushing the have the interview as soon as possible.
