Chris Crocker has formally pulled ahead of Jason Allen at free safety, according to the Dolphins' latest depth chart.

Allen, the No. 16 overall pick in 2006, has looked like a bust since his rookie season. The Dolphins think Crocker will help their corners out more

Apparently the organization likes Crocker more and think he gives us the best chance to win. Allen probably has struggle with reading coverages is my guess. Usually the Safeties act as QB and read defenses and we have always known the Allen is not the brightest apple. My guess is Crocker being a veteran and coming of a good year will start and provide a veteran precence.

I love adding a twist to these battles and Hill has looked good, does Hill beat out Allen again and what happens with Jason Allen.

I would prefer Hill at safety over Crocker, but Im just not big on 5'11 or smaller safeties unless its Bob Sanders. Crocker is an average player IMO, but the safety spot also needs an upgrade at some point along with cb. This is a 3 year turnaround imo, so I think some are setting themselves up for disappointment with these playoff aspirations.

I think Jason Allen is obviously very talented physically. He is very athletic. However his overall coverage skills arent up to par. His biggest weakness though is his tackling abilities. He often takes improper angles and isnt that great at open field tackling either. This makes him a real liability out there at times.

I think if Allen sticks anywhere it should be at corner. He surely has speed and is a good athlete. But, given the way the coaches say Crocker is the best cover man of the safeties, and that Hill has impressed them as well, I think Hill should be the backup there and if Allen sticks he should develope his skills at corner. Maybe hold on to him one more season as a prospect there and let him focus all of his energy on becoming a good corner.

Not sure how much stock to put in that. Sparano said before that he wanted to give Allen and Crocker equal time so he could evaluate them properly. He might want to see more of Crocker. I would guess if Crocker plays a good bit the next game it would be an indication that they are still deciding, but if he gets out quickly, like most starters will in the 4th pre-season game, he'll probably start. That's just conjecture though.

I trust in the coaching staff, but I live in Atlanta and Crocker stunk it up last year.

I have no idea how his agent convinced the Fins to give him a contract.

I hope Jason can pull it together.

I was really pulling for Allen to start at saftey... I guess Crocker has outplayed him, which is fine with me. The better of the two need to be on the field.

I'm pretty confused, to be honest. I know I only see the games, but to me, Jason Allen has been far more impressive than Chris Crocker. In fact, up until this week, when we heard he was getting some first team reps, I thought he had a chance to be cut. Now, I know I'm not in meetings, and its true that Jason Allen doesnt seem like the sharpest tool in the shed, but he has made plays in each game. I remember the nice pass breakup against Tampa, a beautiful open field tackle against the Jaguars, and SEVERAL pass deflections against the Chiefs, including a pick.

Point is, I dont think this is going to stick. Ultimately, I think they will keep 5 safeties (at least initially). I think that was the reason behind both Crock and Allen getting some reps in the nickel this game. I think they like their safeties more than they like Joey Thomas. Now, that could change easily when other teams make their cuts, but next Saturday, I wouldnt be surprised if we have all five still on the roster, with Jason starting and Crock coming in as a nickel/dime back.

I dont see us keeping 5 safeties. Which is why it wouldnt shock me to see Allen cut. I wouldnt mind keeping him as a developemental corner though. He does have some serious athletic ability. But, IMHO he really needs to work on some of his basic football skills such as tackling. If he gets some things straightened out, he could be a serious player in the secondary. It certainly helps him out that Daniels was traded. Definately some tough decisions to make in the secondary.

Renaldo Hill wont make this team over Jason Allen. IMO he is the odd man out.

And when that happens, I still think we open the season with Jason starting and Crock coming in as the nickel or dime back. I dont see how Jason has played himself out of a starting job. Not based on the games, at least.

And I think 5 safeties is probably an option initially, considering Crock and Allen played some corner in this game. Its a sign that its an option they are going to consider. Tony said it best today. He said you dont keep a guy just to keep a guy. You have to have some conviction that he is one of your best 53, and that he can play for you. IMO, I think Renaldo Hill does more for this team than Joey Thomas.

Now, once we see whats on the waiver wire, and can maybe pick up another corner, thats a different story, and in that case, the third FS would probably go.

I question whether or not putting Jason Allen at corner is a good thing if he is 'not up to par' with his coverage skills. Safety plays more to the very athletic, talented defensive backs. Corner requires greater technique and footwork than a safety, hence the premium and rarity on the 'shutdown corner'. I'm not positive, but didn't Sparano say something to the effect of playing Crocker over Allen to see how he performed as a backup filling in the an injured starter, or was that speculation?

It seems that the whole thing started as an experiment and it has gone beyod that. I think Miami is seeing who there best safety is and the best will start.

I hope this is a joke. Allen has improved alot and did well last year. Hes also done good in the latest of pre season games.

I agree, I thought J. Allen has played well this preseason. He looks to be covering alot of ground out there.
