Was just watching the player interviews on AquaVision, and during Channing Crowder's interview he mentioned that he has been impressed so far with Paul Soliai. He said Soliai has surprised him so far and is "beating the hell out of people". Said he struggled last season(duh!), but looks much better this season.

One thing that caught me off guard was that Channing said Soliai lost about 30 pounds since last season. Now, his draft profile listed him around 344 when we got him, and right now the official site has him listed at 355(which was his weight at mini camp). So, if the "he lost 30 pounds" comment is correct, is that off his roughly 345 weight(putting him around 315) from the draft, or did he balloon up to around 380 at the end of last year?

please keep in mind, this is the same Crowder that said back in London he didn't know where London was....so its obviously not that hard to believe she screwed up just how much gained/lost weight Soliai really had

I do believe he was joking when he made the London reference.

She? That is a bit harsh. :shakeno:

He needed to loose some big time weight after last season. He always seemed to be sucking air and tired no matter how long he was in the game. Could have been heat but he looked sloppy last year. If he has dedicated him self and worked his butt off good luck to him. With the coaching staff focusing the OL and DL as hard as they did he really needed to. Will be up hill battle for him to keep a spot on this team. Love the way this team is being built and everyone seems to be getting no special treatment and has to earn their spots with the play on the field.

actually no. He was serious. Said he didn't know what language they spoke in London

Sarcasm anyone? Come on people I feel like I'm taking crazy pills here.

I read in one of the other live blog threads here that Solia was taking a knee on some plays and still looked out of shape. If he sticks Ill be surprised.

First of all, Channing was kidding. Whether he admits it or not, its his personality. Come on, England/English ...? Get the joke? Sheesh.

Nub, I heard that too, and I think its very possible he pulled a Kris Jenkins and ballooned last year. It would explain why he was inactive down the stretch after getting considerable playing time early. Granted, it could have also had to do with his general ineffectiveness, but I certainly think the weight gain might have contributed to it. Fact is, though some of you would be shocked if he sticks, I would be shocked if he doesnt, just because we have no other true NT on the roster after Ferg.

You could be right, and if Ferguson goes dowjn this year, we are screwed IMO. NT is very important in the 3-4. You need the guy to command double teams, and Solia was handled 1 on 1 easily last year. Ill never forget watchng Nick Mangold blow him off the ball 3-4 yards in the game in NY. Mangold is like 285. Id be embarrassed if I was Paul.

a long term YOUNG nt is a definite need. i'm kind of shocked we didn't pick somebody up in the draft.

i thought late ahtyba rubin would have been a nice pick but cleveland plucked him instead after we passed him over pretty late in the draft.

the 3-4 can't function at a high level without a legit nt.

I was shocked too. I was never very impressed with Rubin's play on the football field, though his physique was impressive, but I did genuinely think the Dolphins would have interest in Pat Sims.

I was shocked, but I had no choice but to take it as a sign that they were (somehow) confident in what they had...between Ferguson, Soliai...and perhaps eventually, Randy Starks.

I think Starks will be a DE initially, but IMO they signed him to be groomed by Ferg as the NT of the future. Probably will spell him more and more as the season goes on.

i wonder if the fact that pat sims quit football for a year while at auburn played into the regimes thinking with him. i mean, they brought him in to the facility for a meet and greet and i think a private workout.

we all know parcells likes football lifers. when i read sims had taken a year off it gave me pause. that and his pear like physique. lol

That could be the case. I haven't gotten the impression that they're terribly high on him at LDE so far but the hitting only just began.

It's interesting how they're taking guys like Matt Roth and even Vonnie Holliday, and playing them out in space.

For those of us that saw Merling's future being out at OLB, that kind of shows you what you might eventually see out of Merling in 2009 or so. I think it's clear they'd rather the guy focus on getting acclimated to the NFL and this defense at DE before they start trying to confuse him with things like coverage and playing in space.
