There's been a lot of discussion about the talking heads saying that Culpepper will take at least a year to come back from his injury. I did some searching and came up with a timeline for news articles discussing his surgery/recovery:

Nov 12: Before the surgery, an expert who worked with Dr Andrews for 15 years says it's realistic that he can return in 9 months - but that it could take 18 months to return to his old form.

http://www.startribune.com/dynamic/mobile_story.php?story=5722567
Daunte Culpepper will undergo surgery to repair three torn ligaments in his right knee next week, and one of the foremost experts in the field said it's realistic to expect the Vikings quarterback to return in nine months.
But Dr. William Clancy Jr. cautions that no one should expect the Culpepper who takes the field sometime next August to resemble the mobile player who could take off at any moment and cause defenses multiple headaches.
"He's got a good chance of getting back," Clancy said, "but it will probably take him 1½ years to be at the level he was before he got hurt."
...
Although he is not treating Culpepper, Clancy has an extensive background in sports medicine and is considered one of the leading knee surgeons in the world. Based at Orthopedic Associates of Aspen and Glenwood, Colo., since August 2004, Clancy spent the previous 15 years working with Dr. James Andrews at the Alabama Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Center.

Nov 15: After the surgery we're still looking at possibly nine months.

http://www.sportingnews.com/yourturn/viewtopic.php?t=35466
The team said the surgery went as expected, and the three-time Pro Bowl pick is expected to be ready to participate in training camp next season -- which means a recovery time of about nine months. Rehabilitation will begin immediately for Culpepper, who injured the anterior cruciate, medial collateral and posterior cruciate ligaments in the knee.
"Daunte is the type of player who is going to work extremely hard to get back on the field," Vikings coach Mike Tice said. "He has the heart of a champion. His motivation to be the best will drive him as he works through this."

Nov 16: It could take up to a year - but he could be ready for training camp.

http://www.daunteculpepper.net/fantasy.php
The swelling in Culpepper's injured right knee subsided enough for him to undergo surgery on Tuesday, more than two weeks after tearing his anterior cruciate, medial collateral and posterior cruciate ligaments in a game against the Carolina Panthers. The Vikings' quarterback could require up to a year of recovery time, but the team is optimistic that he will be ready for the start of training camp next summer.

Nov 18: Good news - there was no additional damage found during surgery - but we're still looking at 9 months to 12 months or longer.

http://www.footballdiehards.com/viewarticle.cfm?uid=4133
The fact Culpepper suffered multiple tears -- to his anterior cruciate, medial collateral and posterior cruciate ligaments -- has led some doctors to predict a recovery period of nine to 12 months or longer, but Barta refused to look beyond next summer.
"There's too big a window in there," he said. "From there, it depends on where things are at. You're continually upgrading the time. What things look like in the middle of May could change the number at that point a little bit."
Barta said Culpepper's condition would be re-evaluated during the rehabilitation but that the team's timetable wouldn't change "until training camp or about that time."
"It's way too far off," he said. "We expect to be at a point at that time in which that decision will be able to be made. You're going to have to make a decision at that point one way or the other. That's where you expect him to be. Is he close enough for football? You're in that range."
Except for Culpepper's three torn ligaments, Barta said Dr. James Andrews found no additional damage during surgery and that Culpepper would begin range-of-motion exercises immediately.

Mar 26: Culpepper says his knee is ahead of schedule - but no mention of what the schedule is? One year?

http://www.fspnet.com/headlines/news_story.cfm?UID=5043
And in an exclusive interview conducted by ESPN's Andrea Kremer last week, Culpepper said rehabilitation on the injured knee has gone well and he plans to be ready for Week 1.
"My knee is actually ahead of schedule," Culpepper said.

Apr 13: All right, I threw this one in - take it with a grain of salt.

My dad is friends with his doctor, James Andrews, and my dad says that although he will never be 100%, the surgery went really well, and that he may actually be ready for the opener. Also, after researching the injury in depth (I had a long post about it a while back), I really don't see why he can't e ready by Week 1.

May 13: We now have some confidence that Daunte might be able to start on Sep 7.

http://www.thesportsking.com/story.asp?story_id=93085260
Last weekend, Saban said Culpepper received an "A-plus" review from Dr. James Andrews after a checkup on his surgically repaired right knee.
Saban and others in the organization have expressed an increasingly stronger sense of confidence that Culpepper will be able to start in the season opener Sept. 7 in Pittsburgh.

May 13: Nearly 100 % extension on the knee!!! Great news.

http://www.profantasysports.com/reports/index.php?sport_ID=1&search_by=player&value=1051238
When the OTA days start on Monday, Culpepper will be allowed to make limited rollouts in yet another sign of progress for the knee. His most recent visit to Dr. James Andrews, who performed the surgery last November, showed that Culpepper is nearly at 100 percent extension on the knee. Now that doesn't guarantee he will not suffer a setback. And players recovering from reconstructive surgery such as this typically aren't back to their old selves for up to 24 months after the surgery. But the Dolphins are still pointing at seeing Culppeper in the season-opener.

May 14: We actually have written documentation on the almost 100% range of motion.

http://dolphins.mostvaluablenetwork.com/general/danute-doing-great-in-rehab/
Michael Smith, one of the few very credible personalities on ESPN, talked with the Dolphins’ front office and they told him they’d be “shocked” if Daunte isn’t ready for training camp, much less the start of the regular season.
Culpepper recently visited Dr. James Andrews, the world-renown doctor who performed surgery on Culpepper’s knee last year. His latest evaluation fruited an “A+.”
And that’s not just a doctor trying to praise his own work. Andrews provided written documentation that said Culpepper’s knee is very, very close to regaining 100 percent range of motion.

May 14: Florida Today is reporting that there's nothing to suggest that he won't be ready for the start of the season.

http://www.floridatoday.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060514/SPORTS/605140334/1002/SPORTS
The fact is, nobody knows.
All the Dolphins will say right now is that Culpepper's rehabilitation is going well and all reports from Dr. James Andrews, who repaired three torn ligaments in Culpepper's right knee, have been nothing but positive.
Culpepper is said to be running in straight lines. He's even dropping back and throwing the ball. In short, there has been nothing to suggest he won't be there when the Dolphins open the season on Sept. 7 in Pittsburgh.

May 15: The Dolphins thought about waiting for Harrington to get cut because of Daunte's progress.

http://msnbc.msn.com/id/12775072/
The Dolphins were close to turning down the trade for Harrington altogether recently because of Culpepper’s progress.

May 19: The reports from Dr Andrews are looking pretty dang good.

http://www.sportingnews.com/yourturn/viewtopic.php?t=93656
The team is optimistic that Culpepper could be ready for the beginning of the 2006 season, based on how he's doing in workouts with the team and on reports from Dr. James Andrews, who did the surgery on Culpepper's knee. Still, Culpepper is not out of the woods and could have some type of setback once training camp starts. . . .

May 20: Rehab is going better than anyone expected.

http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/player?statsId=4659
News: Daunte Culpepper reportedly took off running during a passing drill at practice Thursday.
Impact: "He looked good doing it," cornerback Renaldo Hill said. "I didn't see any limp." Culpepper's rehab is going better than anyone expected and he appears to have a good shot to be ready for the season.

May 24: Daunte still says he's ready
Barry Jackson, of the Miami Herald, reports people who have spoken to Miami Dolphins QB Daunte Culpepper (knee) say he continues to express confidence he will be ready for the Sept. 7 regular season opener.

[EDIT: Added article from May 24]
May 24: Saban says Daunte's ready for the next step of rehab. He says if Daunte contintues to improve, he'll "have some oppurtunity" to play in September.

http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/14659149.htm
"Daunte has done more than we ever thought he could at this time in terms of his physical ability,'' Saban said. ``He's been cleared to do things at his position as the next part of his rehab. To start taking three-step, five-step, seven-step drops, hand the ball off on some of the zone plays, drop back and throw it and do what he does with his position.
He's got stability, he's got the girth he needs, the strength he needs to be cleared to do that and he's actually done it for all of these practices. We're pleased with his progress."
Asked if that means Culpepper will be under center in September, Saban said, "I'm not going to speculate and make predictions. Hopefully, if he continues to progress, he'll have some opportunity to do that. I'm not going to put that pressure on him. These are things that go day-to-day and week-to-week. And we're going to see how he progresses."

There has been some statements attributed to Dr Andrews on this board - e.g. that he hasn't backed down from his one year rehab estimate - but I sure couldn't find any reference to a direct quote from Dr Andrews anywhere (except about Brees and other players).

Thanks so much!

Great stuff!!!!!!!!!! Thanks for the work

Also, you could have added the one where the poster was in a cab with a doctor or something like that. I dont remember exactly what it was but it seemed credible for a story.

It's strange that people are more confident that Palmer will be ready week 1 than Daunte when Palmer is still running on an underwater treadmill why Daunte is practicing with the team.

Great post, our offense will be great this season.

By any chance, did you read the latest scoop on the Finheaven front page? Nobody, not even coaches, are willing to stand up and say he will definately start.

:shakeno:

It's called not putting pressure on Daunte and creating expectations.

BTW, Nice job of referencing one of my blogs, hof13!!!
