If the trade talks about Daunte Culpepper coming to Miami are true, I say sign him up! Yeah, his asking price is steep and he had a severe injury last season.....but he would be the first real quarterback we've had down here since Marino. Not to mention that Culpepper would be in the same offensive system that he flourished in two seasons ago, he would have a much better supporting cast and a superior coaching staff that wouldn't include Fred Flinstone (Tice).....if Gus can throw for 18 touchdowns and nearly 3,000 yards with this situation....imagine what Daunte could do.

My only concerns are he looked horrible before he was injured last year and Brad Johnson had way better sucess with the same team. I also am concerned about his injury and the timetable for his return. It is hard to find a good qb, why are the Vikes so quick to get rid of him? If we are going to sign an injured qb i would rather take the chance on Brees.

I'll agree, when you have a franchise QB you don't whatever you have to keep him. This kinda of tells me that Culpepper's should is pretty bad then what everyone knows. If the Dolphins were smart, they would offer a conditional pick (3rd, 4th or 5th) and restructure the contract so it's incentive based with an insurance policy to cover there ***.

unfortunately, imagining what culpepper can do is all anyone can do until at least october, since that's the earliest he'll be ready to play. how anyone can think this is a good idea is beyond me - he blew three of four ligaments in his knee, he's hoping to be able to play by october at the earliest, he's had one great season and was off to a horrible start prior to his injury, and not only will be very expensive to trade for (asking price is more than a second round pick) but will be very expensive to keep (contract gets up to $10 million a year). also, hardly a team first kinda guy - between the boat cruise stuff and demanding his salary to be doubled for '06, he certainly doesn't display any positive qualities to look for in a team leader, which you should certainly be requiring your qb to be.

you have no trouble trading for damaged goods/head cases, but you're hesitant to trade up for jay cutler?

Culpepper did have a HORRIBLE start to 2005......it lasted 2 GAMES. In the following 5 games his numbers were:

96 Comp, 146 Att, 1,095 yds, 6 TD, 4 INT, 65.8%, 7.5 ypa, 90.2 QB RATING.

Now, obviously what he did in the first 2 games does count, but everyone wants to paint the picture that he was horrible the entire time he played last year, which is not the case at all. Right about now, I'd kill for a Dolphin QB to be able to put up those kinds of numbers in 4 games (in the 5th game he only threw 4 times for 28 yards before the injury).

Now, I've also evaluated the first 2 games to see why he was so bad......in week 1, they played the Bucs, the NFL's #1 Defense. He was horrid. But it was his first game in their new system, against the leagues best defense, and he was the leading rusher (no help).

Week 2 - Played the Bengals, who led the NFL in INT's by far last year. He found his team down 20-0, midway through the 2nd qtr due to 2 fumbles by his RB's. He didn't have a turnover before this point. He had to force the ball the rest of the game and wound up with 5 picks.

Also, both games were completely on his shoulders.......he had no running game in either.

Now, I know everyone will say that these are excuses for Daunte, and maybe they are......but what I am trying to do is evaluate his performances objectively and look for reasons why he struggled......that's what I came up with. And when it comes to evaluating his worth to this franchise.........I am willing to overlook those 2 bad games due to the reason I gave, relative to how played in his other 35 games since the start of 2003.

when he hurt his leg I remember that there was speculation that it could be a career ending injury. it was that bad. why would the vikings part with him? seriously.. thats the only thing I ask.. just as why would we part with Ricky in a trade?

This is my own opinion of course, but after living in Minnesota for the past 5 years, I think its more that Daunte wants to leave the Vikes, than the Vikes wanting to get rid of him.

He's the type of guy that needs to be comfortable in his surroundings in order to do well. Right now that place is not Minnesota. Two many people willing to discount his talents and his service. So he wants out. But that's just my own thoughs on the matter Phantom et al.

The injury is obviously a potential problem...........but I've been preacing all along that if a RB (W.McGahee) can come back from the same injury, that I'm confident that a QB can.

And as to why they would be willing to part with him.........teams do things like this all of the time. Why were they willing to part ways with Moss? Why were the Rams willing to part ways with Eric Dickerson? Why did the Colts trade Marshall Faulk? Why did the Rams trade J.Bettis? Why did all of those teams let Deion Sanders leave? Why would the Phins trade O-Gun? Why did the trade Surtain? These players all obviously had a ton of talent, but salaries, injuries, and other factors often lead to teams going in other directions............but it doesn't mean that those players can't still play and be successful with their new team.

the problem here is that he wouldnt even be ready until we were actually into the season... which I assume means passing a physical before the draft is way out of the question.

so committing to a QB that has sustained such a serious inury knowing he probably wouldnt be able to even play until the 3rd or 4th week of the season I think is a huge risk. Games won or lost in the first 6 weeks of the season play a big role on getting to the playoffs.

I agree with you.

But, there's more than just this year...........if we can finally get a FRANCHISE QB, and have him for the next 6-7 years, we should do it. There are times when other players have to step up, if we could win 9 games with Sage and Gus, then we will be okay to hold down the fort and win some games while waiting for Pepp to get ready. What if we stick with Gus and he gets injured, it's the same scenario, except we could prepare for this known, vs the unknown.

and what if.. what if his leg is so messed up he cant play anymore? we basically will be tossing away another year. ofcourse any player can get injured but we know that culpepper is injured

I say we go with a QB who will be ready to come into camp and learn the system early rather then waiting for Culpepper to heal up, learn the system, and then come in half way through the season and try and do well.

Obviously, we would need to protect ourselves against such a scenario.........and before the trade were ever completed, doctors would have to give some sort of positive evaluation on his rehabilitation. But again, he's a QB, not a RB, or WR........it's not like it's his shoulder or arm. And just because he is able to run, doesn't make him a running QB - his passing numbers over the past few years rival anyone out there except maybe Peyton.

Yeah, 19 months after the injury, McGahee played a game. Its month 4 for Culpepper.
