Culture - At tale of 2 Mike McDs

Every team has a culture. Multiple types of cultures have won. Give me a coach who knows which players he needs to be in their face micromanaging everything and which players to relax with because they hold themselves to higher expectations on their own. Then we'll be cooking with gas.

Someone said that? Who did they think set the culture? The lunch lady?

Yes...it was Steak Boy...and he died grotesquely on that hill.

Yeah, I remember that the board had some geniuses awhile back arguing that coaches DO NOT set the culture of a team...I forgot who was willing to die on the hill of that argument but they weren't alone as others also agreed. Genius!

What I got out of that was we have been hiring the wrong coaches which is why we perennially are pretenders. If you guys remember a while back I linked a story about when Suh was here and he called guys out for mailing it in, that was when Dan Campbell was the interim coach. Not saying Campbell doesn’t demand respect , but his status as interim coach didn’t allow him to set the culture like he has in Detroit, and Philbin didn’t set any culture. Neither did Gase, or McD, or Cam Cameron etc.

Flores could coach a defense and the roster overperformed with him but he was too toxic in how he dealt with players and coaches and he needed to be humbled, so we’ll see how it goes for him if he gets another shot. Before that, who instilled a culture here? Sparanos first year? Saban?

The guys down here need a hard ass coach to instill disciple and respect into them imo.

Mcmoron isnt here anymore can we move on or move out please

This is true, but living in Miami requires a different approach than most imo, and a buddy coach who relies on the players to police themselves isn’t gonna cut it.
Agree to disagree on that. McVay has it going pretty well in LA and you can double the distractions there compared to Miami. McD was too lax, but that would not work anywhere, not just Miami. There is an entire range on strictness. I'd argue one shouldn't be too far on either end.

I don't know how I've kept my job all of these years living in the present day Sodom and Gomorrah.

McVay is much more of a hard ass imo than McD could ever dream of being, and I only think an authoritarian with people skills can get a maximum effort out of the guys that live in Miami.

I respect your opinion but yea, we’ll have to agree to disagree on this one.
