UNALAKLEET, Alaska -- Larry Csonka is warming his toes by a crackling campfire on the banks of a remote salmon river that spills into the Bering Sea, watching fly fishermen whip their baited lines into the current.
He twists a cigar in one hand and waves with the other as a boat of Eskimos whooshes past, returning home to a coastal village so distant on the U.S. map that when workers for the 2000 Census began fanning out, Unalakleet was their starting point.
