Dan Marino's records for most touchdown passes will likely fall to 2nd place by October. His career wins as a starting QB will be third all time.
The article takes a number of cheap shots at Brett Favre.
For NFL fans who may not be aware, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel tends to be negative about the Packers and players while the Green Bay Press Gazette tends to be more positive.
The last big records held by Dan is the career yardage mark at 61,361 yards. That is only 3861 yards ahead of Brett Favre's 57,500. The last 3 years Brett has had seasons of 4088, 3881, 3885. His career average is 3833.
The bright spot for Dan Marino's record is that the Packers are improving as a team and with more leads the Packers should be inclined to throw the ball less than in the past.
The down side for Dan Marino's yardage record is that the Packers will likely be going with a rookie running back who if he does not perform will cause more of a passing attack from the Packers.
One should not think that Dan Marino is somehow diminished in history. Like Johnny Unitas he retired with all the records setting a new benchmark.
Rather one should look at Brett Favre's place in history as history should look at Walter Payton. Superior players who played on some bad teams yet did not miss much playing time due to injury. Superior performance sustained over time leads to records. By the way before October 1st, Brett Favre should move into 2nd on the all time consecutive start list.
Actually Marino's career is similar. Many times the Dolphins would have been .500 team or less but with Marino playing the team could still achieve 10 win seasons.
I would hope that among Dolphin fans they do not resent Brett Favre for breaking these records but respect just how many consecutive games and seasons it takes to achieve what Dan Marino did.
Only 3 QB's have ever passed for more than 50 thousand yards. Only 4 have passed for 300 touchdowns. It is an exclusive neighborhood in the history of the league. When Packer fans celebrate Brett's accomplishments they know what it took for Dan Marino to set such records.
Unfortunately for Packer fans it is very difficult to find a successor to such a rare player. Dolphin fans realize this too painfully.
