Over the weekend, Philip Rivers agreed to a four-year, $83.25 million extension with the San Diego Chargers. Yes, like Cam Newton, Ryan Tannehill and Russell Wilson earlier in the year, Rivers got paid. Speaking of getting paid, that's something that is also eventually forthcoming for Andrew Luck and Eli Manning. So why do these half-dozen QBs demand top dollar for their services? Well, they each have specific traits that make them special.

In the first installment of a new series, "Trait Eight," I'm taking a closer look at those six veteran quarterbacks -- as well as the two high-profile rookie signal callers. Which characteristics define each passer? What can we expect in the coming season? Let's take a look!

Ryan Tannehill, Miami Dolphins
Three traits: Timing, touch, athletic. What makes Tannehill an intriguing player to me is how quickly he processes everything, deftly working through his progressions. I was in Chicago for the Dolphins' preseason opener last week, and just seeing Tannehill live and in person, it was on full display. He has a really good grasp of the offense and gets the ball out of his hand in a timely manner.

Expectations for 2015: He's improved each and every year, and I think he takes another step forward this fall. I envision a big year for him, especially with the added weapons at his disposal. You haven't seen DeVante Parker yet in the preseason, due to injury, but trust me: By the end of the season, everybody will know who this guy is. I also love second-year man Jarvis Landry.

It's good to see some of the national guys finally catching on to what an elite guy Tannehill has been turning into. It's been masked somewhat nationally, but those of us watching him closely have seen this trajectory building. I think that some nationally may still be surprised by what unfolds with his career as the northeast media drones on about their same old stories day after day while being completely asleep on Tannehill.

I'd add a fourth characteristic. Tannehill's tough. I think that sometimes gets lost in the shuffle when people talk about what makes great QB's great. Most HOF QB's are among the grittier guys that plyed the position. Both physically and mentally. And Tannehill has that too. In abundance IMHO.

Oh yeah. I'd use different attributes to describe Tannehill but that's some nice praise.

I think Toughness, Intelligence, Athleticism, Arm Strength, and Pinpoint short - intermediate accuracy sums up Tannehill well.

But, but, someone on the forum told me he can't get past his first read, ever. This reporter must not know what he's talking about.

Nice to see Tannehill getting more and more recognition.

The cynical and sugary Alex Marvez. He was wrong about Tannehill and his inability to read Defenses because of his training as a WR. However, the other day he was all over him and he's now a believer.

This is why I don't think the oline will be a huge deal as far as pass protection. It is a timing based offense. 3 step drops and hopefully more up tempo. For a playaction play they will need to hold up though

The notion that Tannehill can be a top 10 QB is still something that most of the morons on talk radio up here in the NY metro area still can't grasp. When discussing the Jets recently (before the Geno incident), Joe Benigno, a host on WFAN and a die-hard Jets fan, said something like (and I'm paraphrasing): 'If Brady serves the full four games, the Jets have a shot at the division. Who's the second best QB in the division, Ryan Tannehill?' Mind you, he said this while partially laughing. I hope Ryan gives all the doubters a nice big ****burger to eat come September. He's still flying under the radar up here though.

I'm just glad the Dolphins knew what we have in him, and more a really proactive decision in extending him.. We're going to be laughing with that deal in the coming years.

Also, sweet avatar

Like others said - not the words I would have used - but good to see.

Intelligent
Accurate
Athletic would be more like it.

Touch seems to be improving, but I wouldn't say it is a hallmark of his.

I would like to see him hit that corner of the endzone throw like the one to Jennings on 3rd down last week. He completely missed it.

Concur. Not only is Ryan physically tough but mentally as well.

p.s. Mentally tough is aka resilient.

I know this is sarcasm, but forthose that don'tknow (which most do) Jeremiah was a NFL scout for the Browns and Ravens before moving into broadcasting....he wasn't fired or let go, just wanted to be a TV analyst more. Really smart guy who knows his stuff...his Podcast is a must listen.
