Here’s the link to the story-

Some lines picked from the story. Can’t wait to see him against Jake.

“it appears he may not be ready to make a significant contribution by the Sept. 7 opener in Miami

“he has seemed lost in pass coverage and hasn't been effective when he rushes”

"the fact that he has shown so little has to be a bit alarming to the organization"

i love it.:hi5:

Just solidiies what I already thought anyway. He will be good in the longhaul but right now is a situational Pass Rusher who rushed up the Draft Boards because of his Combine Hype

I'll just wait till he proves what he is one way or another, I don't believe anything I read anymore.

I don’t understand moving the thread? Did you see the line from the article I included that said-

“it appears he may not be ready to make a significant contribution by the Sept. 7 opener in Miami

This is what I expect from Gholston, and it is not a knock on him. This is a hard adjustment to make. Any higher expectations were unreasonable. I am confident that he will start making plays by week 6 of the regular season.

I'm no Jets fan, but give the guy a break.

"The Jets attribute Gholston's slow start to him missing nearly all of the offseason program because he couldn't report until the semester at Ohio State was over."

"He's converting from basically being a down (defensive end) to a stand-up outside linebacker," said Jets defensive coordinator Bub Sutton, who was allowed to speak with the media for the first time in training camp this summer.

are you all talking about the same gholston that just about everyone said
was the EXAMPLE of the kind of pass rusher jake couldnt handle and thats
why he should be a RT?

that gholston? the one who sacked jake long 1 TIME and relished jake long
to eternal rt?

to funny. oh how the opinions change week to week, or day to day!!

DONT POKE THE BEAR!! you guys are all forgeting the jets/finz history
and it AINT PRETTY!!

the only good games gholston will have will be against us, just watch!

the jets ALWAYS play us tough. if they are down to a chear leader at qb
and 2 water boys as DE's and quadraplegic db's, they will STILL play us
to the wire. every fin fan should know this by now.

so enough of all this "yeah, i knew gholston was a bust, the jets are nothin',
farve is to old" nonsense. this all may be very true, except for 2 games a
season where they will all look like world beaters!! [unfortunately]

Wasn't Gholston considered raw coming out of OSU? I know everybody wants to be quick to annoint guys busts or steals. Though before the Mamula comparisions come out i'll give him sometime to prove what type of player he is.

He was projected to go to the Jets at #6 long before the combine. The kid holds the single season sack record at THE Ohio State University. He's not just a workout warrior.

You're right about him being a situational pass rusher to start - and I hope you're right about him being good in the long haul. Hopefully toward the end of the season he can be a starter and show signs of being very good/dominant.

What I found strange (and Im sure someone will correct me on this) is that he is struggling on pass rushing. Surly going from a hand down DE to a stand-up linebacker is not that great is it? I understand him not grasping the drop back and coverage aspect and this point, but hearing him being in-affective rushing the passer would be worrying (for a Jet fan).

From what I've read he's playing tentatively in all aspects so far because he is still "swimming". I haven't seen him play very much at all, but hopefully get to see him tonight. As a pass rusher you can't be tentative, you have to go balls to the wall from the snap. I don't know why he'd be tentative on plays that his responsibility is to rush the passer though. All he has to worry about is getting to the QB and maintaining contain responsibility, both of which he had to do as a DE in college.

Hopefully the CS can at least get him comfortable with rushing the passer from the OLB position by week 1 because they should be able to have him out there as an effective situational pass rusher at that point.

As for being worried, personally I won't worry unless the end of the season rolls around and he's still having these issues. I'm hoping he starts coming around by mid season.

I look at Merriman and Ware's rookie seasons as a litmus. Merriman didn't start a game until about the midway point and only had one sack to that point (week 5) as a situational pass rusher. Ware started from week one but 4 of his 8 sacks on the season came in the last 2 weeks. Ware was also the best all around athelete of the three coming out of college.
