Honestly ive never hated dave w. as much as some people i know he had one of the dumbest coaching staffs but he was a winner and he knew how to run a team running it 40 times unlike us running it 16 times. now i like nick saban more and he gives us a winning attitude but it just seems like dave w. was drivin out for one bad season i mean i know we went like 0-6 and then he retired but he could have changed it around like nick has done, well here are the record comparasions. Nick saban is a better coach and i am glad we have him but i just miss winning and i hope nick can put the right game plans together and i do think he can lead us to the superbowl next year ONLY if we get some oline so a healthy duante culpepper can do his thing.
WHAT ARE THE POSITIVES AND NEGATIVES OF EACH COACH?

DAVE WANDSTEDT:  NICK SABAN:

You can't do that. there is such a huge difference between the team Wanstedt took over and the team Saban took over. to compair their first two years is just

I am not going to do much in comparing these two. Wanny was given a decent team . And slowly drove it into the ground. Yeah he ran guys into the ground running wise. But what else are you supposed to do when you have a qb that wasn't even starter material. And couldn't throw 15 yds with any accuracy. So what else is he supposed to do. Well if the Qb can't pass real well what is left. And the funny thing was all Wanny had to do was get rid of Fiedler for a Qb that could throw. Yet he stuck with him til the end.

Nick inherited a bad Wanny team. and is trying to rebuild it. I just hope he realizes when the time comes to rid himself of a Qb that may hurt him. And yes I mean Culpepper.

Dude, Wannstedt DESTROYED our team with his idiotic personnel moves. He inherited a team that JJ built as being 1 to 2 offensive guys away from a Superbowl, then ran Marino out of town in a BS and classless way to replace him with Jay Fiedler, destroyed our salary cap, traded away all our draft picks, and made us worse each year he was coach. Saban inherited a mess. There have been many good posts on FH that have shown and supported it takes at least 3 years for a new coach inheriting bad teams to have their first real success. Next year in '07 Nick SHOULD have a 10+ win season... if not, THEN we should be seriously concerned he's not doing things right.

I would not have minded seeing Dave Wannstedt as an assistant defensive coach as long as we had talent to work with. Dave was a good linebackers coach with Dallas. Dave is just NOT head coaching material. A nice guy with a great personality and a guy players like to play for but not cut out for the head gig.

Are you kidding me? Are you really comparing wannstedt and saban? Dude, Wannstedt took over a playoff team that Jimmy Johnson had been building. Saban took over a 4-12 team that was the joke of the NFL.

Wannstedt. You've ruined my digestion. I thought we'd exorcised that demon. Now you've resurrected his polluting spirit, you sacrilegious evil-doer. How could you? What have any of us ever done to you?

Haven't you considered the list of his victims? The Bears? Us? Now the Pitt Panthers?

Leave Wannstedt in oblivion where he belongs, PLEASE!

i don't care if nick saban and dave wandstedt are the exact coach x and o's wise, saban brings an attitude that u need in the nfl. a soft coach might get by for a year or two w/ a good team but it will eventually catch up to him. one thing about saban though is he needs to lighten up just a tad and get off peoples toes. bring an intensity but be mellow sometimes w/ out bringing the house down. overall i feel that saban is a better coach than the majority of nfl coaches. in the end it comes down to players making big plays but also being in the right position because of good coaching. if i recall right, the defending super bowl champions are not looking so great right now either. the nfl is such an up and down league you never know from year to year. if i remember right the rams before their superbowl push had a losing record. to answer the question. saban

Great post, and great line there on bold. I completely agree, though I would like to add, since the first season Wannstedt coached, there were Super Bowl expectations.

IMO, the difference between the two, Dave Wannstedt was in a MUST WIN now situation. Nick Saban is in a LONG TERM situation currently.

You always had the feeling that Wannstedt didn't show progress fast, that his job would be on the line. Every offseason in the Wannstedt Era, I would hear Super Bowl expectations, and at the end of the season, I would always hear "Maybe next year".

With Saban, it was pretty clear from the beggining that we were building for long term success. Last year, it was an evaluation year. This year was just dissapointing from Top to Bottom. From Ricky getting suspended, to the quarterback issue which is still unresolved [still in need of a franchise QB; must draft one], and lack of playmaking abilities from our Wide Receiving core, to the inconsistent offensive line and the injuries this offensive line suffered, and the inconsistent play calling from our offensive coordinator, and under utilizing our best offensive playmaker and franchise player; Ronnie Brown.

Those things you just can't control, it doesn't matter who the head coach is. Just ask Joe Gibbs. Is he a bad coach? No, probably one of the best ever. But his team is in the bottom 5 of the league, and there are many reasons why his team is the way it is, even after a short playoff run last season.

Our defense has played in such a high level, but our offense has NO IDENTITY.

Watch all of you duante hatters are going to be like im am so glad we got him he is the answer just watch what he can do behind a GOOD oline and a healthy knee.

Saban and Wannstedt share two qualities. One they both are clueless when it comes to offense, both being defensive minded coaches and two, they seem to have zero eye to gauge talent on the offensive side.

What makes Saban better IMO is that he has a willingness to open it up on offense and be aggressive. Unfortunately he hasnt figured out how to do it well. He is forced to rely on offensive coordinators and he blew it by choosing Mularkey who is clueless in gauging ingame trends

I also think Saban isnt as stubborn as Wannstedt although he is stubborn. He will make a switch when someone isnt working out, unfortunately it takes him half a season to do it

Take away the disastrous '04 season where everything went wrong and w/o question DW did a much better job than Saban has done.

Dude, this subject should be long closed, Wanny inherited Jimmys team that was still young, it got worse every year Dave was here.

The jury is still out on Saban but missing Wannstedt is laughable.

Smartest post I've read in a while.
