Miami Dolphins training camp update Day 6: David Martin out
by Brian Biggane
Tight end David Martin and safety Ethan Kilmer were nowhere to be seen when the Dolphins took the field for their lone workout of the day Friday afternoon.

Martin, of course, was sidelined during the spring OTAs and mini-camp after undergoing surgery for a sports hernia. He admitted on the first day of camp Sunday that he’d been “nervous” about getting back into action, but hadn’t looked his usual self during the first few days of camp.

History tells us that recovery from a sports hernia often takes longer than anticipated, and running at full speed is the last thing to come back.

In one-on-one blocking drills, Jason Taylor drove tight end Ernest Wilford straight back into the backfield.

In team drills, Ronnie Brown sprung a long run around left end against the second-team defense. A few plays later, Patrick Cobbs had a nice cutback run around right end.

Earlier, the first-team defense more than held its own, with Ferguson busting through and force Chad Pennington to throw the ball away on one notable play.

Kilmer, a free agent signed earlier this year, had been competing for a backup safety spot.

Speaking of safeties, FS Gibril Wilson headed for the locker room shortly after practice began. Since he wasn’t accompanied by any trainers, it’s a good bet nature was calling. Sure enough, he returned moments later.

Jason Ferguson, given Thursday off to nurse a minor shin injury, was back in action.
Majority owner Stephen M. Ross and Chief Executive Officer Michael Dee got caught up on the latest with the help of General Manager Jeff Ireland, while Jupiter golfer Briny Baird, who has had a solid 2009 season on the PGA Tour, was also a guest.
