David Sutton

I keep seeing all this convert into into a tight end junk...Why? Just because he 6'6"?

He's a receiver..And gets of the line quick, and judging from OTA he hands are pretty fine as well. We'll see what he does when the pads come on though...So far I've been impressed.

I know that one of the beat writers raved about his performance in mini-camp. But, Sutton caught a total of 6 passes in his UTEP career, over 2 seasons. And he averaged a whopping 5 yards per catch. If this guy is not good enough to play for UTEP, how do we really expect him to do anything in the NFL?

6 passes for 30 yards? what a WR pedigree!!!!

he has the frame to become a functioning TE, that is what this "junk" is about

pedigrees don't mean a damn thing. yeah it's nice to have a nice shiny history but if the guy can ball who cares?? people excel at all different times in their life.

Don't pretend to know what type offense UTEP runs but maybe they didn't have a lot of weapons and so being 6'6" he got double teamed A LOT(guessing) which they used to their advantage. Iowa had Scott Chandler at TE and he should have had a HUGE year last year but seemed to look for the run before the catch and towards the end of the season the offense kind of stayed away from him.

Anyway back to Sutton. Sounds like a better version of Chandler from a an athletic stance but maybe hasn't being playing football that long and hasn't really broken out yet. I mean he is in an NFL Camp right now with ONLY 6 catches so maybe we're in for a treat. I'm rooting for him.

Actually, Johnnie Lee Higgins was the man. They also had other Receivers on the roster that where ahead of Sutton due to the fact, that he was a transfer from a JrCollege. Never really got to see alot of him on the football field. But, He is awesome at volleyball, that I can tell you that....LOL. Me being from ELP makes me baised though. I really hope he makes the team. Even if it is on the Practice Squad.

Pedigree matters when it means that the first time Sutton ever even strapped on pads and tried this little sport we call "football" was 2003 at Lincoln College.

He's a volleyball player. He transferred from Lincoln to a more football-oriented junior college...and he became a highly sought after prospect just because, let's face it, the guy is 6'6" and 225-230 pounds, ran a 4.35 at a JUCO player NFL-style combine, and also had like a 40 inch vertical. Naturally, he had some big big schools calling him up. He went to UTEP though, supposedly he liked the offense. That first year at UTEP he didn't hardly do anything while they tried to teach him the ropes as a WR...but the second year? He should have done something. He didn't.

Now, when you look at him at mini camp, I can see why the beat writers are all over him...and I can also see why he's not going to be on the roster in 2007. The beat writers are all over him because this is a padless mini camp, with no tackling, and so his massive size is making him a natural red zone threat. That WILL change when the pads get strapped on and tackling is allowed. His size gives him a huge advantage when the players can do no more than play patty-cake with each other. When tackling starts, pads come on, you watch that size all the sudden look not so big.

Right now there is no reason to believe that Mr. Sutton is any more than the next in a long line of chaps like Charles Jordan, Jerris McPhail, Nate Jacquet, Larry Shannon, JR Tolver, Derrius Thompson, Robert Baker and Kendall Newson...guys who could impress the heck out of you in padless mini camps but disappeared when the pads came on.

Personally, I haven't seen a whole camp with him but I have seen him run some routes. I've seen practice footage from mini camp. He doesn't MOVE like a receiver. He doesn't have body control or run clean routes.

I also have noticed that it is very conspicuous how the beat writers are all raving about his size and ability to make catches in the red zone...but nobody's talking about his speed. Remember, this is a cat that was hyped transferring from JUCO to real college football BECAUSE he ran a 4.35 at that JUCO combine at 6'6" and 230 pounds. That's not a fact that is well-advertised and, to tell you the truth, I bet the local beat writers don't even know about it.

So what you're getting from them when they talk mostly about his ability in the red zone and haven't said a peep about his speed, is a CLEAN and UNBIASED look at what his functional strengths and weaknesses are...and apparently for all the track times, speed does not appear to be a functional strength for him on the football field. I would speculate that this is predictable based on the running I've seen him do...

It isn't garbage to say that he'd probably be better off moving to tight end. The tight end's role in the passing game is a lot easier to digest. Antonio Gates would not be Antonio Gates if they had him stay at a lower weight and try and be a receiver. I think they have he right of it working Sutton out at receiver for now because he's attending the school of hard knocks as far as learning the nuances of the passing game. They can beef him up and teach him to block some later date. For now his focus needs to be improving on the whole nothing worth of knowledge he has about being an NFL pass catcher.

As Cameron said, this is going to be AT LEAST a two year project with him...maybe a three year project. The hope is that by the time you polish him up, he doesn't leave for some other team.
