Davon drew obviously is one guy who was on our draft board this year, if he wasn't we wouldn't have brought him here.

I'm wondering though... was davon our first option in the 5th round ? he was picked a few spots ahead of nalbone

If that's the case, we just got an extra 5th rounder, in some way

I've never heard of the guy, maybe our more knowledgable draft gurus like CK, tedslimm, realdriscoll, etc might tell us more about him though...

It would be interesting to know who was kept ahead of him and the reason for his cut? Was it the numbers game, or just not that great?

Looks like he had 1 catch for 6 yards against the Falcons, but that was it.

i am just curious why we got Davon Drew over Alex Smith...

seems like drew is a good pass catcher which should be awesome for spreading the field i hope it works out.

there were a lot of TE's taken in the spots right before us in the 5th round. Davon Drew to the Ravens at #149... James Casey the the Texans at #152... Cornelius Ingram to the Eagles at #153... and then John Nalbone joined us at pick #161... I too would be inclined to think we just missed out on one of these other guys... Awesome to basically get an extra 5th round pick and possibly one we had sights on in the first place...

Edgar Jones is the #3. He's not too impressive as TE.

I knew nothing about Drew before today, so I went to Ravens 24X7. Ravens fans say Drew came into camp out of shape and overweight. Most agree he has not impressed, but many felt he outplayed Jones. Jones however plays both sides: TE and DE/OLB as well as special teams. Fans felt Jones was a worker, a few described Drew as lazy.

There seemed to be a numbers game involved in Drew's release. They were making room for Moll the OL from Green Bay they were acquiring.

Combine Results:
40 Yard Dash : 4.82 seconds
Bench Press : 17.0 reps
Vertical Jump : 29.5 inches
Broad Jump : 113.0 inches
3 Cone Drill : 7.28 seconds
20 Yard Shuttle : 4.56 seconds

Choose Tight Ends Beckum, Travis Coffman, Chase Cook, Jared Pettigrew, Brandon Selected by: Baltimore Ravens
Round: 5
Pick (Overall): 13 (149)
Discuss Pick Analysis: The Ravens grab an athletic receiving tight end with good hands and ball skills. Drew has only spent a few seasons at the position, but he has flashed enough skill as a pass catcher that he is viewed a potential H-back as a pro.
Overview
Drew took advantage of ECU's climb to national prominence early in the season to improve his draft stock. The honorable mention All-Conference USA pick is an ideal H-back candidate because of his size and receiving skills (43 catches for 695 yards and three scores). Came to college a successful high school quarterback out of North Carolina and played quarterback his first two seasons at ECU, so he's still learning his new position. Scouts think his best football is yet to come. Had an arm span of 34 1/8 inches and a hand span of 9 1/2 inches at the combine.

You may have nailed it. Drew might have been the TE that they were after in the draft. Now the opportunity to get him again arose and they put in the claim. It will be interesting to see if Haynos and Nalbone remain on the roster.

Let's be fair and list his negatives too:
Negatives: Body type somewhere between a receiver and tight end. Will be better as a H-back in the pros. Only average straight-line speed and does not separate from quicker linebackers. Potentially good blocker but needs a lot of technique work. Lunges in his in-line blocks, gets ripped too easily and loses his balance. Blocks downfield but does not always hit his target or sustain well as he fails to use his hands or move his feet. Will lower the shoulder instead of sustaining when in a fullback mode inside. Needs work on his route running - doesn't sink his hips and will round off his cuts.

Looking at a Ravens forum, it appears that Drew is a development players who they somewhat like but didn't expect to do anything for a couple of years. The expected him on the Ravens PS...

So, he will probably be on the PS...with Nalbone/Haynos on the 53. I don't expect big things from either of them this year...

If you claim a guy, he must go on the active roster, not the PS. Drew will be part of the 53.

My understanding is that he only has to go on the team if claimed off of a PS, not just off of waivers. Was Drew claimed off of a PS?

I watched a fair amount of East Carolina ball this year. Drew can play. I think he's like a Cameron Morrah, personally. A little bigger.

The most important thing is that he's suited for an H-Back role which David Martin was never fully suited for, and which is an important position in Miami's defense. Also, I'm not really sure Haynos is suited for that either. Or Nalbone. Those guys are more suited for on-the-line positions.
