Guys, I watch a lot of rugby here in the UK and the one thing I`ve always noticed is the quality of tackling. These guys wrap opponents up and take them to the ground. You rarely see a bad/missed tackle in rugby. I despair when I see NFL players hit a guy with his shoulder and the ball carrier bounces off and carries on. Most of the time these `shoulder` tackles could have been `wrap them up and take them down` tackles. Poor quality play.

There were too many missed yesterday

a 10min rugby tackling vid was being passed throughout the League earlier this season, highlighting how to go head-up, wrap, and spin to the ground; you can see several Fins players using that tech (Misi, Jelani, Grimes, Odrick), wish someone woulda passed that joint to the dbs (espec 27, 20)

Tackling is less about technique and more about "want to". What makes Wilson such a bad tackler but Delmas a good one? Delmas wants to tackle dudes. Until Wilson wants to tackle dudes he'll always be a bad tackler.

I have to completely disagree with you on that one. A huge amount of it is technique. Tackling technique is a massive point of focus on a weekly basis in pro rugby. Teams even employ different tackling styles (wrap, chop, choke) depending on the opponent.

I still remember that shoulder tackle Wilson threw in the beginning of the season where he went with such force and just bounced off the runner. It was comical and pathetic

Well I hear you my friend, however we have a Football league that have gone soft. You have to tackle a certain way or you will get flagged and or a fine or both and suspension. It's ridiculous nowadays. It's a travesty

Hartlines attempted tackle after the int makes Jimmy Wilson look like Chuck Norris

I played rugby at a decent youth level, now ive never actually played nfl but tackling is clearly similar but also pretty different. Cuz of the routes etc and the vertical nature of the game

I disgaree with the poster who said tackling is about will... technique is absolutely vital. You think those bum corners dont want it more than anyone else?

You don't think these guys already understand tackling techniques? They've practiced it for probably 20 years by now. They either want to do it or don't. Your technique means nothing to a guy who isn't trying.

The difference is that in football, you don't HAVE TO wrap with your arms under the rules of the game. In rugby it's mandatory. Not wrapping up is a penalty offense. So rugby players are - by necessity - far more focused on technique than football players. Not just practising it but applying it in-game.

I think football would benefit massively from a rule requiring the arms to be used in a tackle. They could then avoid a bunch of stupid dangerous injuries, but also do away with a load of stupid and inconsistently-applied tackle rules. But that's a separate topic.

You see a lot of football players with terrific tackling technique but at least as big a number of guys who confuse the tackle with a shoulder-charge.

Guess which group Jimmy Wilson belongs in?

Jimmy Wilson has always been this way. I think he was taught one philosophy coming up and is unable to change his game. It's becoming intolerable to the Dolphin philosophy. It's a shame we've had to keep him. If I were Hicky, moving Jimmy Wilson would be a priority this off-season.

You gotta give our defense a hall pass when it comes to tackling.. You see all thru training camp, they're used to tackling our offense.. A shoulder tackle.. a little push here or there.. shoot, blow Hartline a kiss from 30 yards away and he goes down.. So we have to understand our defense mindset is "tackling is easy.."

Hard to practice fundamental tackling technique when the NFLPA and the NFL raped coaches of appropriate practice time in the offseason with the new CBA. The NFL changes the rules immensely for tackling almost over night but disallows time to practice it and then fines and suspends players for bad form. Bass ackwards.

Complete agree. There should be a need for a "tackling motion", like you have for a "football motion" after a catch. Actually try to make a tackle, not just a hit, and you remove a lot of injuries and penalties. I get so pissed watching DBs run and hit a guy with their shoulder, only to have the carrier teeter, get his balance, and go on for 10 more yards.

let me also add your much less apt to lead with your head/face when not protected by a helmet or facemask.
