Defensive end Phillip Merling’s impressive season-opening performance just got even better.

Merling who had four solo tackles, including one for loss, and was all over the field has been credited with an eight-yard sack of Falcons’ quarterback Matt Ryan during the third quarter of last Sunday’s loss.
Stats keepers originally gave the sack to nose tackle Jason Ferguson, who arrived a split second after Merling. Ferguson, who joined the team in March 2008, continues to seek his first sack as a Dolphin.

Hopefully Phillip can emulate that performance again Monday Night.

Obviously I'm bias (since I work for a website that produces stats retrospectively) but tackle scorers are pretty much useless. Its hard doing it in real time, but theres no reason that they shouldn't go back and change things ... and the generous awarding of assists is a joke.

You think how hard it was for this to get changed and this was because it was a sack ... now think of all the tackles that get credited to the wrong people (normally a scorer just throws on tackles and assists to player he expects to get them) and you realise how inaccurate the tackle count really is.

Mini rant over ... Merling was fantastic and caused our offensive line as many problems as any defender I can remember over the last year. He should see more playing action.

This just in....

I actually drank 7 beers during the game.
I forgot I had 1 beer in the fridge before I bought my 6-pack.

When I saw the play I thought it was Merling's sack and was very surprised to see in the Box Score that they gave it to Ferguson.

I was high on Merling when we drafted him, but I hadn't been high on him since.

Last week, though, he was our best player. If he continues to play this well, we'll have one of the top few sets of DE's in the league (throw in McDaniel and we're very deep at the position).

He's a gamer apparently so from now on every year in training camp I will just ignore those who say or imply Merling is no good.
