Over the past two seasons, the top QB's in the NFL have been accurate on 40-50% on throws over 20 yards in the air. This includes drops, which have to be accurate throws for the receiver to drop the pass.

In 2012, Tannehil was at 43% (#7), which was good. Last year was 33% (#17), which was not, and because of the problems in connecting with Wallace. It would appear that RT has the ability to throw deep but, that he and Wallace just need to get their timing down. I expect to see that this year.

Think the issue is more Wallace than Tannehill believe it or not. Tannehill seems to connect better with other receivers deep, even though they obviously have less speed and hence more likely to have less separation from the receiver. Tannehill obviously does need to improve on deep throws like other aspects of his game, and hopefully this year is another step forward.

while they expand his route tree...

my concern is getting this "up-tempo" going strong.

The main problem IMO was the timing of the passes. He often threw the pass when Wallace was down the field too far making it impossible for an in stride pass. Lazor seems to love deep passes so I expect that to become one of his first reads making the timing better. I also see more screens which should make the defense less willing to play off coverage opening the deep pass

Not giving up on Ryan yet but some quarterback just have trouble with the deep route. if their efficiency on short and intermediate routes is very good it really does not matter much.
The threat of the deep ball however is important and we must hit a few early to establish that threat.

Matt Moore throws a great deep ball. Much more to being a top QB than just that.

any two 10yr olds with a football can complete a deep bomb, since it's Play #1>#infinity.. why can't these two?

Tannehill looks good to me with his reads and accuracy. His outs are elite. His inside throws are also pretty good. If he can hit 1 deep pass a game we should be fine.

I totally disagree. I'm a Tannehill supporter but too often it looked like Wallace was waiting for the ball to come down and enabled the defender to break it up. Roethlisberger was good at throwing the deep pass to Wallace. I really don't think that Mike is the problem.

Throw deep 3 or 4 times a game and hit one or two and I'll be happy. Just enough to have the defense respect it and keep a safety back.

This makes sense to me, as I don't recall Tannehill struggling with the deep ball in his rookie season, certainly not to the extent that it was apparent last year. Hopefully they can get that timing down, Wallace can and SHOULD be used in many different ways, but his bread and butter is still his ability to get open deep for the homerun play

how can anyone blame the receiver for getting under thrown? wallace is past his man by 5 yards and if the QB can deliver the ball in stride it is a TD, no bones about it. you can either do it or not and that is what makes you elite. tannehill is not elite, (yet?). we will see.

I'd like to see a comparison of Wallace vs other Miami receivers deep if anyone has that. I too think that Tannehill is the cause of the miscues most often and this is based solely on observation.

i'm just curious, what was the drop percentage of year one compared to year 2?

In 2012 RT was 20 of 51 with 2 drops, 2013 he was 16 of 64 with 5 drops.

One other thing I noticed. In 2012 RT was 3 of 18 Left, 4 of Middle, and 13 of 26 Right with Hartline 10 of 21 with 1 drop. In 2013, he was 7 of 19 Left with Hartline 5 of 13, 2 of 12 Middle, and 7 of 33 Right,

I saw where a number of QB's are a lot more effective throwing deep to the right, while it not mattering with others. Any opinions on why other than it being a bit more difficult to throw somewhat cross body as opposed to straight away?
