Looking too far into the future:up:

I started this thread thinking, like most thinking/hoping we would draft our franchise NT 2010 draft.

Got me thinking, we all agree front 3 especially NT contribute mostly to the effectiveness of the 3-4 defence. If we do traget this in 2010 i would love ............
Terrence Cody, DT, Alabama (6-5, 365)

If we did somehow pull this off, considering the 2 best front 3's in football, Patriots and Steelers are aging front 3's(pats poss losing Wilfork next yr), with Merling, Langford and hopefully Cody, real possibility that we would have potentially a dynamic, young and aggresive front 3 and what i would believe the best in footbal.

When considering this I looked at the rest of the roster. Bar W Allen, Joey Porter and Y bell, This is a young defence, with players to fill in for these ageing players once the time comes, i.e. S Smith/Jason Allen, C Wake and Clemons.

With this in mind and considering we were 9th in scoring defence, without a passrush to support Porter, we even have room for improvement. With Merling stepping in for Holliday, C Wake as a 3rd down rusher for now and M Roth shedding weight and I believe adding more passrush, this would vastly improve.

I was excited to look at our potential defence for next 2-3 yrs, with the thought that next year we would draft with first 2 picks, NT and ILB.

SS - G Wilson - 27
FS - Chris Clemons - 23
CB - V Davis - 20
CB - S Smith 21
ROLB - C Wake - 27
ILB - Channing Crowder - 26
ILB - draft
LOLB - Matt Roth - 27
DE - P Merling - 24
DE - K Langford - 23
NT - T Cody .........hopefully

This is a defence that could be together for another 3-4 yrs:up:

I belive M Roth will be vastly improved this year, will shed 10-15 pounds, with more passrush and still sealing the edge.

I know its all if if if......will C Wake be able to step up, will Merling be effective as a DE and will young secondary fulfill potentiall.................but i have faith in FO and yes, yes, yes i think it is safer to say they will fulfill rather than bomb:up:

If they don't think they have their future DT on the team, by the end of the year. They will get it via free agent. Not by the draft.

Also teams know if they go 4 WR's we take our NT off the field. So drafting a guy like Cody in the 1st round would probably never happen.

Plus, Bill likes to draft players that can play 3 downs with high draft picks and Cody is clearly not that kind of player.

On top of all that Bill has never drafted a DT in the 1st round in his 21years of drafting, and only used two 2 second round picks in that same time frame.

Cody is too big to play. If you remember, Coach Sparano said that the NT they have in rookie camp might have to lose some weight, and he only weighs 325. If you watch Cody, you see that he is slow and doesn't have anywhere close to the quick surge that you need off the line.

plus 6'5'' is kinda tall for a NT

Yep, they say he's 365 but he looks and plays a'lot more like 425.He may be a 1st round pick but only a GM with one foot out the door would take a guy in the 1st round when he looks like he's trying to eat his self out of the nfl before he even gets in it.

For the most part people only get fat because they are lazy and we all know Bill isn't going to spend a 1st day pick on lazy players.

The Pats just drafted Ron Brace because they don't have the money to keep Vince Wilfork.

Vince would be # 1 on every ones list as far as 3-4 DT go.Vince is from here and went to Miami but he doesn't like the Dolphins at all, but if he's upset at the Pats this would be the on his short list of teams he'd want to play for.

We'd have to over pay for him but every team does that in FA anyways.

I would love to steal Wilfork and bring him back home to Miami.

I dont see us overpaying for Wilfork as other teams will offer more than we would be willing too.

I still think draft is the best option, getting a young NT to stick between Merling and Langford.

I think you should start to fall in love with Lionel Dotson or Paul Soliai because it takes about a year to learn how to play DT in a 3-4.Like i said before if our new DT isn't on our team right now, then they will pick him up via FA.

The last the two DT that became starters for Bill and his old teams. Were both drafted in the 7th round.Just like Lionel Dotson.
