i posted this as a reply in another thread but thought it warranted its own. sorry for the redundancy.

the contention that defense wins championships is inaccurate. its a virus of the mind that continues to be regurgitated over and over and over by the main stream media who simply dont look into the matter themselves perhaps because they are too ignorant or too lazy...and they begin to believe their own fallacy. Then we as fans begin to believe it. ITS NOT ACCURATE. it would probably be MORE accurate to say GREAT OFFENSES win championships than the opposite. Rams, 49ers 4x, Broncos 2x, Colts, etc etc. The truth is offense probably plays a bigger role than defense, but most importantly stellar quarterback play. There are VERY few super bowl winners that didnt have one of the top QUARTERBACKS in the game when they won a championship. So while defense CAN win championships as shown by the 85 bears 2000 ravens and 2002 bucs, and parcells Giants if you want to include them (even tho the quarterback play they had was outstanding in both games). more often than not its the team that controls the game offensively that wins the big one. To win a championship, or to get there, a team needs to be GREAT on one side of the ball, and efficient on the other. but DEFENSE DOES NOT WIN CHAMPIONSHIPS its a fallacy. great TEAMS win championships or if you want to narrow it down to one thing...GREAT QUARTERBACKS win championships...so pray that Henne becomes great! or that we find that guy thats top 5 in the league....it will give us the best chance. but unlike the YEARS we went without drafting a quarterback...or trading good picks for poor ones. this regime will mine for a quarterback EVERY year....even if we already have one. just be grateful we finally have somebody who gets it in charge! look how much talent he left Dallas with...look at how much talent he left the Jets with after a shot period and look at what New England had in place when he left. Parcells WILL find the talent given time

when you let up less points than you score, you win.

Steelers 6X

Ravens in 2000

Patriots have always had a solid D and lost the SB when they had a record-setting offense

Dolphins of 72

I can throw out just as many, if not more teams that won because of their defense.

TRENT DILFER! Please don't tell me that you think that he was the reason for the Bucs pummeling the Raiders...

only part of the post i actually agree with.

The entire argument is erroneous...there is no 1 single most important part to win a championship...its a TEAM effort.

and wasnt THAT the whole point of the post??? look at the links! if you want to make an argument in todays game does great defense or great offense win championships. it would be MORE accurate to say great offense. but the fact of the matter is neither statement is accurate to begin with. Great TEAMS win. but good luck if you dont have a great quarterback play.

if you have one mediocre unit and one fabulous one...you better hope the fabulous one is the offense...on balance youll have a better chance to win....you have to score points to win

steelers 6x? really? they didnt have GREAT OFFENSIVE teams?? how many points did the cardinals score?? pretty sure those teams have a pretty significant amount of OFFENSIVE players in the hall of fame last time i looked...same with the dolphins. they controlled the game offensively as well. the only example here is the bucs and they are the exception to the rule. that was my whole point.

you have to be good on both sides of the ball to win. You need to be able to score and you need to be able to stop the other team from scoring. It really is that simple.

A good turnover rate can't hurt... Which means a defense would be nice...

Remember last year?

So are you saying Trent Dilfer was a GREAT QB? Please explain I'm missing something here.

you cant have one and not the other and expect to be successful.

Our defense lets up so many big plays fast that even if our offense was like the Colts or the Saints we'd probably still have the same record. Our defense put us in the hole quick almost all year. We did have faster scoring drives and more points with Henne. How many of those games did our offense score more than enough points but our defense let up so many...

it also wouldnt hurt if we had a good special teams so are offense can get better field position.

I think the old saying that defenses win champion ships is bull crap

we had deccent to good defenses over the last 15 years but our offense has always been close to the worse. and it hasnt gotten better yet.

defense doesnt win championships by itself, but your not winning anything with a crappy D

You need to have an identity to win championships - and you need to be able to dictate to the other team how the game is gonna be played...
