Ok a little change of subject here. You may or may not agree but our it IS our secondary that totally loses our games for us... well, besides Ginn. But regardless of all the compliments for sean smith and vontea (who I like both myself) and for the nameless safties they are no doubt the biggest weakness.

We are 3rd in the league in rushing Defense which is a big positive for us. So we all know what has to be address next year...

I am very optimistic this time (for once) that in the offseason we will aquire some big names for our secondary. Really only because ALL of our new owners. Does anyone else think we will see a big change in who we bring in because of that????

If we go uncapped I can see guys like Jason Allen, possibly Wilson being dumped due to their contracts and that it would be best to dumb players who have big contracts and are not up to bar. I think it depends on how Clemons and Culver play as well to influence Wilson being kicked off. Personally I think Crowder, Wilson, Allen and Ginn will be four I can almost be positive will not be on the roster next year. Because I think Wilson is more of a SS then a FS.

I would spend all our draft picks on the defense and I would go the free agency route for the offense (since the offense is a lot younger-- only Ricky is getting up there in age).

Two words.....Taylor Mays.

Two words.....Taylor Mays.

two more words.... Stupid pick.. You should have said Eric Berry.

Taylor Mays is exactly what we don't need.. another strong safety who sucks in pass coverage.

http://walterfootball.com/scoutingreport2010tmays.php

Weaknesses:
Takes false steps in coverage and poor angles
Lacks instincts
Zero ball skills
Not much of a playmaker
Poor tackling technique; throws body around without using arms/hands to wrap up
Hasn't improved his weaknesses going back to sophomore season
Occasionally not in position
Plays out of control
More of an athlete than a football player

Summary: Mays isn't a free safety at the next level; no chance he pans out there because he is horrible in coverage and has zero ball skills. Mays idea of playing football is running and throwing his body around, which is why I am giving him the nickname “The Trojan Torpedo.” I think Mays can start at strong safety for some team, but he will be pretty average.

Mays is the Vernon Gholston of safety prospects. Sure he has great measurables, but so did Gholston. I personally wouldn't draft Mays in the top 40 picks, but his draft range is all over the board. He could go top five to a team like Oakland or he could fall to the lower part of the first round.

Player Comparison: Roy L. Williams. It's like someone cloned Roy Williams; Mays and Williams are the EXACT same player. Mays will struggle greatly in coverage at the next level, but he hits hard and is good in run support. Buyer beware.

He sucks in coverage. This would be the last thing the secondary needs. If they are fortunate enough to be in a position to draft Eric Berry from Tennessee, that's the safety you want. Has drawn comparisons to Ed Reed.

Haha Grey. Didn't read your post before I replied. Great minds think alike huh? :chuckle:

Totally disagree with the blame being completely on the secondary. Why do Bell and Wilson lead the team in tackles? Where is a consistent pass rush?

We don't have a single linebacker that is able to cover ANYTHING.

Taylor should be a situational player, Akin should be a reserve, and Porter/Crowder have both suffered let downs from last season.

I love when guys mention Taylor Mays. He's nothing more then a hard hitting Yeremiah Bell.

While I agree we need defense we better get another ****ing WR.

I know our lb's need an upgrade too but how can you deny the lack of play in the secondary? It's there to see every week. Are you serious

I like Berry a lot but I hate it when they compare players to others so soon. Phillips was the next Ed Reed too rem?

Lots of players STOCKS fall from Sept. to January, the unknowns are ht eones that rise tremendously.

If we have an uncapped year next year we can cut players without taking any cap hits? if so then I do hope its uncapped next year so we can cut Wilson and Bell if he doesn't take a MASSIVE pay cut and Crowder.

I'd draft all DEFENSE and get a WR in FA.

We need FS, SS, 2 ILBs, 2 OLBs, NT.

thats 7 picks going all to the defense, we need a TE, a WR, and another WR.

I'd spend 1 pick early on a TE, anywhere from the 2nd to 3rd round.

You better believe Ireland will trade ANYONE on this roster for draft picks. Ginn can bring in a pick. I'd take up to a 3-4th for him.

Clemens is the future at SS hopefully, and he is just starting to see action. They have to draft up the middle of the defense and find a legitimate #1. IMO they focus the draft:

FS
ILB (2)
OLB (1)
NT

In no particular order.

Ginn won't garner a pick. Besides, I really don't see him going anywhere if they can come up with a true #1.

This would be a good year to have a surplus of draft picks and knowing how the Trifecta works, I expect to see some off season moves that will accomplish that.

I think the triad will keep Crowder around another year and draft someone like Spikes from Florida to learn for a year.

We will also need someone to replace Jason Ferguson.

A few stats from the safeties and ILBs

Wilson-thrown at 13 times 9 rec for 111 yrds.qb rating 95.4
Bell-thrown at 23 times 15 rec for 175 yrds..qb rating102.6

CC thrown at 21 times 16 rec for 202 yrds.qb rating 121.5
AKIN-thrown at 9 times 8 rec for 156 yrds..qb rating 155.8
The 155.8 is the worst QB rating out of 53 inside LBs rated by pro football focus.com

This tells me that major changes should take place starting with the inside LBs...they cant defend any passes, they cannot even tackle since both safeties have become #1 and #2 in tackles on this team, they do not have any game changing abilities, they cannot sack, intercept or cause forced fumbles...they are good at sucking.

Do you keep Bell who is good versus the run and terrible versus the pass or Wilson who is better against the pass and NOT so good against the run.

This defense needs a major enema
the outside LBs are getting older by the day
and will soon need either a cut in playing time or
replaced all together

I doubt that one draft will solve all of the Dolphins problems on defense

They were playing great first half of Saints game. Then came second half and it was like they went and had all you can eat at the Sizzler, and were ready to take a nap.
