It seems the whole league is changing to a 3-4 these days, and there are plenty of those system gurus on this list. But the best coordinators are the coaches who can adapt the talent at their disposal and attack an offense in a variety of ways.
RealScouts, Sporting News' team of former NFL scouts, rank their top 20 defensive coordinators:

10. Paul Pasqualoni, Dolphins. Bill Parcells and Tony Sparano love him, and after watching that turnaround last year, who are we to argue? Pasqualoni has all the requisite knowledge and adaptability skills that make him an asset within any scheme, but he is an old-time coach who can also teach technique on an individual level. Joey Porter's career was over until Pasqualoni arrived in Miami.

Don't agree with some of the people they have ahead of him, but I think some of the lower ranked DC's should be higher. We'll see what he can do with more talent. So far, I'd have him somewhere between 10 and 14. Above average, note elite.

that list is kinda off..
I mean I think our guy is about right we got a LOT of turnovers last year and did a solid job without having THAT much talent and having it be a new system to everyone.
but
Vikings at 3? they give up more pass yards than anyone
Dom Capers at 5? I think we all agree on something there
washingtons Blashe at 6? ummm that D is not even strong.
Zimmer of the Bengals at 9? THE BENGALS!?!? that D hasnt made plays in 3 years

Hmm, I would have thought Coach P wuld have had a lower ranking. I wasnt very impressed at all with some of the playcalling last year, especially the last quarter of the season

by that list, numbers 5 thru 9 should be moved way down. Capers, c'mon. Hasn't been relevant in a couple years. I personally respect him, but didn't like how he ran our defenses. His year with Satan i believe Satan had all the input and he didn't do the greatest when Scam gave him the D to himself. Nolan hasn't had a great D since Baltimore, and I think that's more a scheme D than anything, seems every Balt D coach is good at running it with that personnel. Blanche is nothing special. And Pees? We all know Belicheat runs that D. Not saying Coach P needs to be higher but the writers these days just seem to put down what they can the fastest they can without thought. I hate it.
